Egyptian laborers work at a local cemetery that is expanding toward Egypt’s first pyramids and temples at Dahshour. The construction at the cemetery has raised a panic among antiquities experts, who warn that it endangers the largely unexplored complex. The cemetery’s tombs are small complexes on their own, built mainly of cheap white bricks. Each is a walled courtyard with multiple niches, where several family members can be buried. Rows of them now cover several acres inside the UNESCO-defined Dahshour zone.

A view of the Furnas hydroelectric dam in Sao Jose da Barra, Brazil, which is running at only 15 percent of its capacity due to low water levels, according to the dam's operator. One of the worst droughts in Brazil's history is depriving many dams of the water they need to generate electricity, but the country appears to be less vulnerable to an energy crisis like the one in 2001, because the government has since built dozens of thermoelectric power plants to reduce dependence on hydro power.
