‘Desert Air’
The National Geographic Museum’s exhibit of George Steinmetz’s aerial photographs runs through Jan. 27. Steinmetz will be speaking about his work and newest book, “Desert Air,” at National Geographic headquarters in Washington on Nov. 27. Here are some of Steinmetz’s photographs, with his descriptions.
5 Seconds
Pinnacles of sandstone rise through the orange dunes of the Karnasai Valley, near Chad’s border with Libya. The orange sand is formed by the erosion of Nubian Sandstone, which itself was formed from ancient sand dunes. Thus the sand is being recycled, from dune to rock to sand and back again. Strong Harmattan winds blast the base of the sandstone pinnacles, and wind pits around their bases. Except for a few families of goat herders who come here once a year, this part of the Sahara is uninhabited and otherworldly.
