Eradicating polio in India

In 1988, when the World Health Organization launched the global campaign to eradicate polio, the virus was paralyzing 1,000 children around the world every day, nearly half in India. In 2009, 741 Indian children contracted the incurable disease, more than anywhere else in the world. As of Jan. 13, there have been no new cases of a child being paralyzed by polio in India in a year. In about a month, a panel of global polio experts is expected to remove India from the list of polio-endemic countries. It will take two more years to declare the country free of polio.
