This NOAA GOES-East satellite infrared image shows Hurricane Irene nearing land. Throughout the day, Irene was predicted to strengthen, with winds of around 125 mph as it continued its projected path along the U.S. coastline. Hurricane Irene intensified to Category 3 status as it bore down on the Bahamas on a path that will likely see it slam into the U.S. mainland by week's end, U.S. forecasters said.
