Labor groups slammed the wage increase, saying it was inadequate for the Asian financial hub. Known for its stunningly wealthy tycoons, the southern Chinese city is also home to hundreds of thousands of workers who live on hourly wages sometimes as low as $2 an hour prior to the introduction of the minimum wage.

Citizens of Ibi celebrate the annual festival with a battle using flour, eggs and firecrackers. The battle takes place between two groups: a group of married men called Els Enfarinats, who take the control of the village for one day, pronouncing ridiculous laws and fining the citizens who infringe them, and a group called La Oposicio, whose members try to restore order. At the end of the day, the money collected from the fines is donated to charitable causes in the village.
