Indian police arrest 3 men in alleged rape of American woman

June 6, 2013

Indian police said they arrested three Nepali men Thursday in connection with the alleged gang rape of an American tourist this week in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh.

The 30-year-old American reportedly was unable to find a taxi to her hotel in Manali about 1 a.m. and decided to hitchhike. She told police that a truck driver and two accomplices drove her to a secluded spot, raped her for more than an hour, then stole her cellphone and cash before leaving her beside the road. Police said they used phone records and a description of the vehicle to make the arrests.

Attacks on women have become a volatile issue in India since a fatal gang rape on a bus in New Delhi in December. The ensuing outcry led to a tougher rape law.
