A sculpture of former South African President Nelson Mandela is presented in Howick, South Africa, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Mandela's capture by the apartheid police. The unique sculpture designed by artist Marco Cianfanelli stands 10 metres tall and is made from 50 steel columns anchored in a concrete base. Mandela, now 94, was arrested as a young liberation fighter on August 5, 1962, near the town of Howick, just months after he founded the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC). A modest monument at the site of his arrest was put up in 1996, but it will now be eclipsed by the monumental sculpture.

In the ritual, a sacrificial female baby goat is thrown into a pond as local men in teams from localities compete to kill it, with the belief that whoever takes the prize will have a prosperous year ahead. Animal rights activists have been protesting against the cruelty of the festival despite the Nepalese government providing a small amount for the organization of the festivities.

A internally displaced Congolese family sits on school benches on the outskirts of Goma, Congo. The first case of cholera has emerged among thousands of people in an impromptu refugee camp in eastern Congo who fled fighting between a new rebel group and government forces backed by U.N. peacekeepers, Doctors Without Borders reported. Congo's army now controls only the city of Goma and the village of Kibumba. Now the rebels hold all towns going north as far as Rutshuru and are threatening to besiege Goma. The U.N. Security Council on Thursday demanded that the M23 rebel group halt any advances toward Goma.

Monty, the Wadworth brewery shire horse, is given a pint of beer outside the Raven Inn in Poulton as he starts his two-week annual holiday. Hundreds of people gathered to watch as Monty and fellow dray horses Prince and Max — who are employed by the brewery in Devizes, England, to deliver beer 50 weeks a year to pubs — were each given a pint before being released into a field. The brewery has been employing shire horses for more than 100 years to deliver beers to local inns and hostelries. Prince, Monty and Max are three of the last remaining working shires left in the British brewing industry.
