Supporters of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi demonstrate in Cairo. More than 200,000 supporters of the Islamist president demonstrated near Cairo University in a showing reminiscent of the country's 2011 revolution. Morsi came under intense scrutiny from liberal and secular opponents last week for assuming near-absolute powers and hastily passing a highly controversial draft constitution. His supporters demonstrated near Cairo University, instead of Tahrir Square, in a bid to avoid violent confrontations with their political opponents.

While supporters of Morsi gathered in Cairo, demonstrations against the president continued Saturday, including this one in which a protester, carrying a cross and a Koran, chants anti-Morsi slogans in Tahrir Square. Many of those critical of Morsi are secularists who are fearful that Morsi and the Islamist dominated parliament will set up an Islamic government in Egypt that would be hostile to non-Muslims and Christians.
