World Press Photo contest winners Here are the top photos of 2012, as judged by the 56th annual World Press Photo contest. The winners were announced Feb. 15.
Photo of the Year
This Nov. 20 photo by Paul Hansen, of the Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter, won Photo of the Year. It shows the bodies of 2-year-old Suhaib Hijazi and her 3-year-old brother Muhammad being carried to a mosque for a burial ceremony after they were killed when their house was destroyed during last year’s Israeli airstrikes on insurgents in Gaza City. The children’s father, Fouad, was also killed and their mother was put in intensive care.

Fausto Podavini, of Italy, won the daily life stories category for his essay on an aging couple’s dealing with Alzheimer’s Disease. In this June 1 photo, Mirella assists Luigi. Mirella, 71, spent 43 years of her life with the only person she loved, with all of life's difficulties, laughter, and beautiful moments. But over the last six years things changed: Mirella lived with her husband Luigi’s illness and devoted her life to him as his caregiver.
