washingtonpost.com launches new OPINIONS section
Features New Look, New Voices, User-Generated Content
Arlington VA - Sept.1, 2005 — washingtonpost.com today announced the launch of a new OPINIONS section on the popular news site.
Opinions, which will include a variety of viewpoints on important issues, web-only content, and reader feedback among other features, is designed to showcase the site's diversity of editorial voices as well as encourage the "national conversation" that takes place on the web about issues of importance.
"The launch of Opinions is the next step in our commitment to enhancing the interactive experience of our users, and recognizing that the open and free exchange of ideas about news and issues can sometimes be just as compelling as the news itself," said Jim Brady, executive editor of washingtonpost.com.
Caroline Little, publisher and CEO of washingtonpost.com, said "Opinion and politics are at the core of our brand, particularly for online users. This launch helps strengthen that relationship by allowing users to be more directly involved in dialogue and debate."
In addition to a more visual graphic design, features of the Opinions section include:
- The Debate - a weekly collection of opinions, analysis and links reflecting thoughts on a single controversial issue
- Toles v. Toles - web-only comics from the Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist, Tom Toles
- Your Post - the best of user comments from around washingtonpost.com
- Think Tank Town - Ron Nessen, former presidential press secretary, looks at emerging ideas from Washington's array of influential policy institutes
- Reporting for Duty - a personal account from washingtonpost.com staffer and Army Reserve office Bert Stover on his upcoming deployment to Iraq
Additional features will be added in coming months.
