Washingtonpost.com Honored with third Edward R. Murrow Award and Local Emmy for Video Journalism

Arlington VA – June 26, 2006 — For the third successive year, washingtonpost.com has received the Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence for Non-Broadcast Affiliated Website. The award is given by the Radio and Television News Directors Association for excellence in broadcast journalism.

In a related honor, washingtonpost.com video journalist Ben de la Cruz was a recipient of a regional Emmy award for his short-form documentary Homeless in DC. The regional Emmys are given by the National Academy for Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) – National Capital/Chesapeake chapter.

The award marks the first regional Emmy for a video produced originally for the web. While the national Emmys awards have established a category for Internet, cellphone and iPod video, the regional Emmys have yet to that category.

The winning documentary was eligible because of a rebroadcast on cable channel MHz Networks.

Homeless in DC won in the Public/Current/Community Affairs Program or Special category.

Caroline Little, CEO and publisher of washingtonpost.com said “These honors are further evidence of the world-class quality of video journalism produced by the washingtonpost.com multimedia team. I am extremely proud of the pioneering work they do bringing video news to the web.”

The RTNDA award follows a series of significant honors in 2006. The site recently received Eppy Awards for Best Overall Newspaper-Affiliated Service, Best Internet Community Service (for the Interactive Congressional Votes Database) and Best Internet Classified Service (for the site’s Cars section).

The multimedia team of washingtonpost.com has received numerous awards for original video content, including 31 of 90 awards given in 2005 by the White House News Photographers Association.
