Those Pesky Allergies: What to Do?
By Mary Lee–Wong, M.D.

  • Check weather reports for the pollen counts in your area so you're prepared. For dust mite allergy:
    • Use dust–mite–proof covers for your mattress and pillows.
    • Wash all bedding in very hot water (above 130º F).
    • Consider getting rid of carpets, venetian blinds, down–filled blankets and feather pillows.
    • Replace upholstery with either washable or wipeable furniture.
    • Apply acaricides such as benzyl benzoate and tannic acid frequently.
    For mold allergy:
    • Repair water leaks.
    • Keep windows closed to prevent the influx of outdoor molds.
    • Do not use humidifiers in the home.
    • Consider placing a dehumidifier in damp areas such as the basement.
    • Use a hygrometer to keep humidity lower than 50 percent.

    For pet allergy:

    • Remove the pet from the home (or at least from your bedroom).
    • Remove animal dander reservoirs such as carpeting and upholstered furniture.
    • Wash the animal weekly.

These suggestions are worth trying. They may be difficult to accomplish. Even if they decrease your exposure, they may not totally eliminate it. So you may need to move to the next level: medications.
