WASHINGTON - The annual survey conducted by The Century Council has revealed for three consecutive years that the majority of the adult population does not know how to determine personal BAC levels in order to make responsible decisions before getting behind the wheel. Even more alarming, more than 70 percent of the general public do not know what the legal limit is in their state.

The Blood Alcohol Educator CD-ROM program is the centerpiece of The Council's efforts to educate the public on how to make responsible decisions regarding alcohol consumption.

The Blood Alcohol Educator (BAE) is a free credit-card sized CD-ROM available in Spanish and English. The program is designed specifically for adults to learn about their individual state law and their personal BAC level by entering the program's virtual bar. Once there, the user can choose from more than a dozen different drinks, choose the speed they would like to consume the drink and based on their gender and their weight, the BAE program calculates their individual BAC level.

In addition, the program tracks how long it will take for the user's BAC level to return to zero. A friends option allows users BAC Education to see what the BAC level would be of men and women of different weights if they were consuming the same amount of alcohol at the same rate.

To promote the use of the BAE CD-ROM, The Century Council has designed a traveling truck that builds out into three cyber café stations so visitors can try the program.

The BAE Truck has traveled to 30 states, logged more than 150,000 miles and approximately 100,000 BAE CD-ROMs have been distributed. Demand from law enforcement officials, legislators and educators for a BAE Truck visit prompted the council to create a second traveling vehicle, the BAE Van, which is designed to travel to smaller venues.

In addition to the two traveling vehicles, The Council launched www.b4udrink.org in December 2000. The Web site is interactive and allows visitors to download the BAE program in Spanish or English. For more information on The Century Council log onto www.centurycouncil.org or www.b4udrink.org.

The Century Council is a national not-for-profit organization funded by America's leading distillers, committed to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking through education, law enforcement and public awareness programs.
