"No. 4" is the fourth album from Stone Temple Pilots. It was produced and mixed by Brendan O'Brien, who also produced the band's "CORE," "PURPLE," and "TINY MUSIC, SONGS FROM THE VATICAN GIFT SHOP" albums. "No. 4" which was recorded in several Los Angeles studios and mixed in Atlanta includes 11 new Stone Temple Pilots compositions. The music was written primarily by guitarist Dean DeLeo and bassist Robert DeLeo, with vocalist Scott Weiland and drummer Eric Kretz also making contributions. All lyrics were written by Weiland. The band was joined in the studio by Barrett Martin (Skin Yard, Screaming Trees), who played marimba on "Atlanta." In addition, O'Brien added backing vocals, percussion, and keyboards to various tracks.
Stone Temple Pilots sign with Atlantic Records in April, 1992 "CORE," the group's label debut, is released five months later. The album is highlighted by such radio/video favorites as "Sex Type Thing," "Plush," and "Wicked Garden."
In August 1993, the band performed at New York City's venerable Roseland Ballroom decked out in full Kiss make-up and regalia. Since that time, Stone Temple Pilots have shared stages with an remarkably diverse field of artists: Neil Young, the Flaming Lips, Aerosmith, Megadeth, the Meat Puppets, the Rolling Stones, and the Butthole Surfers.
Stone Temple Pilots taped their installment of MTV Unplugged in November of 1993. The show aired in February, 1994.
On March 1, 1994, STP received a "Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal" Grammy Award for "Plush." Other honors bestowed upon the band over the years include two American Music Awards, one Billboard Music Award, two Billboard Video Awards, and an MTV Video Music Award.
"PURPLE," the band's second album, was recorded in three weeks during March of 1994. The album is released in June. "PURPLE" contains such popular tracks as "Vasoline," "Interstate Love Song," and "Big Empty." The album entered the Billboard 200 at #1 (where it remained for three straight weeks). It stayed on the chart for a really, really long time.
Atlantic's "ENCOMIUM: A TRIBUTE TO LED ZEPPELIN," which includes STP's recording of "Dancing Days", was released in March of 1995.
"TINY MUSIC, SONGS FROM THE VATICAN GIFT SHOP," is released in March, 1996 and debuted in the Billboard 200's top 5. The band's third album includes the hits, "Big Bang Baby" and "Lady Picture Show."
1997 and 1998 saw the four Pilots involved in various extracurricular activities. In September of 1997, Talk Show - a project that includes Dean, Robert, and Eric - released their self-titled Atlantic album. The following March, Scott released his solo album, "12 BAR BLUES."
On May 4, 1998, the three Stone Temple Pilots albums were re-certified by the RIAA: "CORE" - 7x-platinum; "PURPLE" - 5x-platinum; "TINY MUSIC, SONGS FROM THE VATICAN GIFT SHOP" - 2x-platinum.
March 1999 found STP playing a surprise concert at the Viper Room in Los Angeles, marking their first live performance in over two years. The impromptu gig featured some 80 minutes worth of material culled from the band's three albums, along with the "No. 4" track, "Down."
In August, the band performed a surprise, invitation-only concert in Las Vegas. A resulting STP concert special is set to air this fall on MTV.
