Area Commemorations of Sept. 11

Communities across the Washington region will be commemorating the third anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with candlelight services, a jazz festival, even movie screenings. Below is a listing of some events on Saturday.

ALEXANDRIA

6:30 p.m. Community worship service of remembrance and prayers for peace at Fairlington Presbyterian Church, 3846 King St. 703-931-7344.

ANNAPOLIS

6 a.m.-7:30 p.m.: Prana Studio tribute to "the heroes of 9/11." A free day of yoga and special sessions of Nia and meditation. Prana Studios, 2901 Riva Trace Pkwy. 410-266-3401 or www.pranastudio.com.

7:30 p.m.: Community singalong led by the All Children's Chorus of Annapolis. Includes patriotic favorites and old standards. City Dock. 410-263-9191 or lizhb@aol.com.

ARLINGTON COUNTY

9:30-10 a.m.: Memorial wreath-laying at Arlington National Cemetery and moment of silence with Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and family members of victims of the terrorist attacks. Meet by 9 at the group marker for 9/11 victims. RSVP by today to Cmdr. Dave Julian. 703-697-9283.

9:30 a.m.: A moment of silence and the tolling of a bell 184 times, once for each victim in the Pentagon attack. Sponsored by Arlington County at Couthouse Plaza, 2100 Clarendon Blvd. Also on that day, the community is encouraged to display American flags in remembrance as part of "Flags Across Arlington."

All day: Volunteer opportunities with the Arlington County Volunteer Office for those who wish to remember 9/11 with a day of service and charity. (703) 228-1760.

ARNOLD

ASHBURN

2-5 p.m.: All-American Family Festival sponsored by the Church of the Holy Spirit, on the grounds of Mill Run Elementary School, 42905 Waxpool Rd. Rain date is Sept. 18. 703-726-0777.

BLADENSBURG

6:30 p.m.: Candlelight ceremony to honor Sept. 11 victims and U.S. troops hosted by the town and by American Legion Colmar Manor Post 131, at the Bladensburg Waterfront Park, Old Bladensburg Marina across from the Peace Cross memorial. 301-779-4264.

BOWIE

7 p.m.: Memorial service and concert sponsored by the city, veterans groups, U.S. Rep. Steny H. Hoyer and other political leaders, at Allen Pond Park, 3330 Northview Dr. Those attending are asked to wear red, white and blue. 202-225-4131.

CENTREVILLE

Noon: A commemoration ceremony as part of the 13th annual Centreville Day celebration in front of St. John's Episcopal Church, 5649 Mount Gilead Rd. 703-818-9561.
