In the season's first glimpse of real winter weather, snow flurries mixed with cold rain began falling Sunday evening in parts of the Washington area as the National Weather Service warned of rapidly falling temperatures and widespread precipitation.
The situation could make for a challenging morning rush hour in some areas.
The National Weather Service, in a winter weather advisory, said the area would probably get light snow overnight with two inches or less in some localized areas and nothing but rain in others.
It said a strong arctic cold front would move through the region this evening, with mixed snow and rain changing to snow showers.
Temperatures will plummet overnight to the mid-teens by the morning and a wind chill that will feel like it is 0 to 10 degrees.
"If you will be venturing out overnight and Monday morning," said the Weather Service, "dress warmly in several layers of clothing and be sure to cover your head and neck."
And for Pete's sake, don't forget your galoshes.
