U.S. Loses, Extending Davis Cup Run of Futility

Russian Yaroslav Rybakov was second (7-9 3/4), and countryman Pavel Fomenko got bronze (7-7 1/4).

Tobias Unger of Germany won the men's 200 in 20.53, while Britain's Chris Lambert won silver in 20.69 and Poland's Marcin Urbas took bronze in 21.04.

Russian Dimitriy Bogdanov won gold in the men's 800 in 1 minute 48.61 seconds. Spaniard Antonio Reina got silver (1:48.76) and countryman Juan Jurado won bronze (1:49.11).

• CYCLING: Lance Armstrong finished 140th in the prologue of the Paris-Nice cycling race, a key tuneup for the Tour de France in July when he will go for a record seventh straight title. Armstrong, who previously raced in this event in 1999, has not placed a priority on winning. In the prologue, the Texan was 27 seconds behind winner Jens Voigt of Germany.

The race will resume today with a 115-mile ride from Etampes to Chabris and ends March 13.

SOCCER: Brazil defeated Uruguay, 5-2, to win the qualifying tournament for FIFA's first Beach Soccer World Cup in Rio de Janeiro. The United States finished third by beating Argentina, 4-2, on the famed Copacabana beach.

Brazil and Uruguay are guaranteed berths in the Cup, which will be held in May in Rio de Janeiro. The United States and Argentina also qualified.
