MARYLAND

Man Shot at Metro Station

A man was shot and wounded at the Shady Grove Metro station last night during a dispute between pedestrians and the occupants of a car, Montgomery County police said.

The victim and three or four other people had just gotten off a Metrobus at the station when there was an exchange of words with the occupants of a car, according to a county police spokeswoman.

A passenger got out of the car, and as the pedestrians ran, he fired. The victim, who appeared to be in his late teens or early twenties, was taken to a hospital with a wound that did not appear to be life-threatening, police said. A spokesman for Metro said he believed the man was hit in the arm. Police said their investigation included looking into the possibility that the shooting was gang-related.

Crash Kills Teenage Driver

A Prince George's County teenager died Friday after his car crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a sport-utility vehicle, police said yesterday.

Police said Anthoney Dragotto, 17, died shortly after the 5 p.m. crash in the 8400 block of Dyson Road in Brandywine. He lived in the 9800 block.

Cpl. Kimberly Brown, a county police spokeswoman, said alcohol was not a factor. She said the investigation shows that Dragotto, driving an Acura, crossed the center line and tried to regain control of his car. He overcompensated, and his car spun a few times, crashing into a Ford Explorer. No other injuries were reported.

Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (R) unveiled a package of bills last week aimed at curtailing teen driving deaths. Traffic accidents involving teenage drivers have killed at least 17 others in the Washington area since September.

Four Sought in Hit-and-Run

Police in Prince George's County continued the search yesterday for four men who abandoned a maroon 1989 Mazda 323 after it struck two pedestrians in the 8700 block of Riggs Road in Adelphi early Thursday, killing one.

The men fled on foot immediately after the 8:45 a.m. crash. Police said at least one of them was bleeding, and the driver was wearing blue flip-flops.

Police said the Mazda's driver lost control of the car, drove off the road and struck several signs, a utility pole and the two pedestrians -- who were identified only as two men, one 19 and the other 55. The older man died at a hospital.

Man Fatally Shot in Pr. George's

Prince George's County police are investigating the shooting death of a man inside a Capitol Heights home last night.

Officers responded to a reported shooting in the 5100 block of Heath Street about 7:30 and found a man with gunshot wounds to the upper body, said Cpl. Kim Brown, a police spokeswoman. The victim was taken to a hospital where he later was pronounced dead.

A woman at the home was questioned by homicide detectives, but no arrests were made. Police have no motive in the shooting, and said there were no signs of forced entry.
