After Tinker, Taylor Excels

"My situation was a little bit different, but I can understand why he'd have his guard up," Arrington said. "I've talked to him [Taylor]. I think he can deal with the situation a little bit better, because if you're not painting a picture of who you are through the media, then it's left up to you guys to paint the picture.

"I always feel like [athletes] should at least give the media, give the fans an opportunity to find out the person you are through your words. But he has to do it on his own time."

Teammates and coaches note that Taylor is the Redskins' youngest player at 21. And they describe the portrayals of Taylor as in sharp contrast to an affable, self-effacing person.

"I've always encouraged him [to talk] because you're going to be a part of the community," Gibbs said. "I know players from the first go-around here, some of the most high-profile people right now that I love to death went through a period when they weren't talking to the press."

Redskins Notes: Tennessee Tech wide receiver Drew Hixon has been released from a Virginia hospital and is back at home nearly three months after suffering a helmet-to-helmet collision that led to him being in a coma.

Hixon, the son of Redskins assistant Stan Hixon, was tackled in a helmet-to-helmet collision and carried off the field during a game with South Florida Sept. 11. He was moved to the University of Virginia Medical Center in October to be closer to his father and family home in Leesburg. Case worker Becky Monteith said Hixon has made steady progress and is using a cane to walk. She said he will continue with outpatient rehab. . . .

Place kicker John Hall, who has missed the past five games with a groin injury, expects to make his return Sunday. Hall kicked well in yesterday's practice. "I'm optimistic," Hall said. . . . Defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin -- listed as questionable with a hip flexor -- expects to be back after missing his first game of the season last week. Jermaine Haley, Griffin's replacement last week, is doubtful with a knee ailment.
