Yahoo Makes A Deal With The Donald

Fans who can't get enough of NBC's "The Apprentice" can visit a new companion Web site produced by Yahoo and watch an extra 40 minutes of video each week that will not be shown on Thursday's reality TV show.

As part of a deal reached with Mark Burnett, producer of Donald Trump's junior-mogul TV contest, Yahoo will run the official Apprentice Web site this season. In addition to offering Web-only programming, the Apprentice site features a different cast of advertisers than the TV show.

The site (apprentice.yahoo.com) plans to offer weekly "play-by-play" commentary from goofy former contestant Sam Solovey to be posted shortly after the show airs. Also on tap are interactive games, episode recaps, contestant biographies, polls about who will land the big job offer from Trump and photo galleries of the Trump suite where the players hang out.

"Some of the video will be posted on Thursday nights and some on Mondays," said Jim Moloshok, a Yahoo senior vice president. "We want to create the ultimate location where you can have a deeper experience with the program." Among the clips posted after Thursday night's season premiere was footage showing one team's toy creation and highlighting the brash personality of the other team's leader.

The Web video may be free, but it is not commercial-free. Five advertisers have signed up to show 15- or 30-second commercials in the Web video, Moloshok said.

Yahoo also has integrated a sound clip from The Donald into its instant messenger screen, so people can send messages to friends and have them hear Trump bark, "You're fired."

Song Promo Ends

The 49-cent song download sale from RealNetworks Inc. officially ended last week. RealNetworks sold 3 million song downloads during its three-week sale, thanks to the half-price offer that covered most of the 640,000 tracks available from the company's Internet music store. Now the company is offering 10 tunes a week at 49 cents each as part of a "Rolling Stone Top 10" list that it has started in partnership with Rolling Stone magazine.

More Burger Tunes

If you didn't like that Internet tune you got with your Big Mac, maybe you'll like the sounds that accompany Whoppers. Burger King and America Online joined the hamburger music-promotion frenzy last week, announcing that every purchase of an Original Whopper sandwich will be accompanied by a free Internet song download through Oct. 3. Purchasers get a code on their burger wrappers, which they enter at a special Web site, www.haveityourway.com, to redeem free music downloads from AOL Music. Three months ago, McDonald's kicked off a similar deal with the Sony Connect music service online.

Yet another Washington-focused blog is up and running on the Web. Dcist.com officially made its debut last week, proclaiming its intent to cover news, sports, nightlife and culture in and around the nation's capital with a slant toward young people.

"We will be surveying what's in local media and what's on the Web and also doing some original reporting," said Rob Goodspeed, 22, one of the site's two editors.

The site is part of a family of city guides or blogs (short for Web logs) that includes an established site in New York, Gothamist.com.
