A 22-year-old man was shot to death early yesterday at a gas station in Northeast Washington, police said.

Police identified the victim as Terron W. Corum of the 6900 block of Hanover Parkway in Greenbelt. Officials said he was shot once in the body, in the 1300 block of New York Avenue NE.

He drove a short distance but stopped near railroad tracks in the same block. He was pronounced dead at Washington Hospital Center at 6:05 a.m. Police urged anyone with information to call them at 202-727-9099.

Funeral Cancels Trash Collection Today

The District is canceling residential and bulk trash collection today and sliding most pickups back a day to allow sanitation workers to attend the funeral of a crew chief this morning.

Johnny L. Harrison was killed July 16 when his truck rolled over him in the 3400 block of Macomb Street NW, police said. His funeral will be at 11 a.m. at the Imani Temple, 609 Maryland Ave. NE.

Once-weekly Supercan trash collection and recycling collection will "slide" one day for the rest of the week, beginning tomorrow. Neighborhoods with twice-weekly trash service will see their first collection slide one day, with normal collections Thursday and Friday. Monday's bulk collection appointments will be rescheduled.

4 Families Homeless After Montgomery Fire

A blaze that started early yesterday in a Montgomery County townhouse drew 85 firefighters to the scene and has displaced four families, fire officials said.

The fire started at 2:30 a.m. in the 20100 block of Waringwood Way in the Montgomery Village area, said Pete Piringer, spokesman for the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.

The two residents of the two-story townhouse escaped after being alerted by a smoke alarm, Piringer said. One, a woman in her sixties, was taken to the hospital as a precaution, he said.

The blaze damaged three nearby homes, Piringer said. He said the damage is estimated at $775,000, $400,000 of which occurred at the home where the fire started.

Piringer said the cause of the fire appeared accidental, perhaps triggered by an electrical problem.
