'Fahrenheit's' Combat Theater

It's been hard to go more than a few days without hearing the name Michael Moore this summer, and in some places "Fahrenheit 9/11" might still be too hot to touch. As of Friday word came that the film won't be shown at any Army bases, with distributors and military officials pointing fingers at each other.

The Army and Air Force Exchange Service, the group that books flicks for military base theaters, said the decision had nothing to do with content and was based purely on financial considerations. Spokesman Judd Anstey said distributors did not make the group aware of the film's availability until it had booked movies through Sept. 3. With the DVD reportedly coming out a month later, Anstey said "for films screened within that type of time frame, the box office is marginal."

A spokeswoman for Lions Gate, one of the film's distributors, countered that "we have made all requested materials available to them, but unfortunately a commitment to show the film has not been made." A spokesman for Fellowship Adventure Group, another distributor of "Fahrenheit 9/11," went on to say that no official DVD release date has been given, and suggested that there were more obvious political motivations for not screening the film.

Snoop Dogg Gets Served

When rapper Snoop Dogg stopped in Virginia for a concert last week, he probably didn't expect to leave with a lawsuit against him. The Virginia Beach Sheriff's Department served papers on Calvin Broadus (the real name of Mr. Dogg) pertaining to a seven-year-old, million-dollar lawsuit brought by music promoter Patricia Ann Richardson, who claims the rapper tricked her into picking up three packages from a motel that were filled with marijuana. Though Richardson was not arrested, she was handcuffed and brought in for questioning at a Petersburg police station.

Joseph Kaestner, Richardson's attorney, has been unable to go forward with the suit for the past seven years because the "Starsky & Hutch" star so rarely ventures into Virginia. Now that papers have finally been served, the rapper will have 20 days to file a formal response to the allegations.

Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts is undergoing treatment for throat cancer, a spokesman for the band told the Associated Press yesterday. The 63-year-old Watts was diagnosed in June, and has completed four weeks of a six-week radiotherapy course at Royal Marsden Hospital in London. Because the band has been "relaxing between work and commitments" following last year's world tour, Watts's treatment has not interfered with any recording or performance plans . . . The New York Post reports that "Less Than Perfect" actor Andy Dick went on a tabloid-baiting bender at the trendy Manhattan nightspot Suede. Apparently distraught over the death of "best friend" Rick James, Dick was spotted, the Post says, thrashing about on the floor of the men's room, insulting a member of 'N Sync, trying to kiss actor Seth Green, punching a friend in the face, and finally being carried out of the club "blubbering" and tossed in a taxi. Sounds more rock star than ABC sitcom star to us . . . Fitting in nicely with the week's buzz about coming out of closets, indie film icon Heather Matarazzo has told the New York Daily News that she's a lesbian. The "Princess Diaries 2" and "Welcome to the Dollhouse" star told the paper that she's "not as angry anymore" because she's found happiness with another up-and-coming actress. "I've met the person I'm so madly in love with. She's not famous yet. She will be."
