Maryland Democrats' Real Values

Tuesday, December 21, 2004; Page A24

In his Dec. 12 Close to Home piece, "To Stay Afloat, Maryland Democrats Better Swim in the Mainstream," Tim Maloney said that if the Democrats insist "on being the party of gay marriage or partial-birth abortion, they are slamming the door on many moderates. These voters sympathize with traditional Democratic goals."

What is a traditional Democratic goal if not believing individuals should be treated fairly and not discriminated against just because they are in a relationship with someone of the same sex? And is it not a tradition of the Democratic Party to uphold a woman's right to medical privacy and to leave medical decisions to a woman and her doctor?

Mr. Maloney, like many others these days, believes that to win, Democrats in Maryland need to sound more Republican. I do not think this is the case. I think the problem with Democrats in Maryland is that too many of them have forgotten what the traditional values of their party are and how to communicate them to voters. What Democrats in Maryland need is to return to and take back traditional American values of fairness, freedom and equality.
