Cronkite Says Schieffer Was Better Choice as CBS Anchor

Rather announced his impending resignation in November, as CBS News awaited the results of an independent study of its botched "60 Minutes Wednesday" report about President Bush's National Guard service. The independent study faulted the anchor for his overenthusiastic pursuit of the story and his defense of it after questions arose about the authenticity of documents used in the report.

Yesterday, on CNN, Cronkite continued his eye gouging:

"I think that there was a general feeling among quite a lot of us around the CBS shop and, indeed, some of the viewers, that Dan gave the impression of playing a role, more than simply trying to deliver the news to the audience. . . . It's a personality question. I don't think he was thinking of himself of playing the role, although I don't know that. But that is the impression that came across. "

WHAM!! KRAK!!

Finally, Blitzer asked Cronkite whom he'd like to see replace Rather on a more permanent basis. CBS News's current game plan calls for Schieffer to step in temporarily, until a new anchor, or team of anchors, is announced.

And, just when you thought the 88-year-old Cronkite would be all worn out, he came back with one more good right cross to the nose:

"I think there are several, but I wouldn't like to go into that now. . . . They're going to find it's going to be tough -- not to follow Dan so much as to follow Schieffer."

BIFF!! THWAP!!
