Exhibition
If "Absorption and Transmission" sounds like the subject of a scientific lecture, that's because it's something you'll find at the National Academy of Sciences. Except what's being presented is not a paper, but an art exhibition -- by identical-twin photographers Mike and Doug Starn, who came to prominence in the 1980s with their cellophane-taped and pushpinned photographic installations. Focusing on tree branches and the veins of leaves, the somewhat more traditional works in this show allude to the human body, eye, brain and nervous system. It runs through July 15. Call 202-334-2436.
Music
Seven countries, seven cultures, seven colors, seven virtues -- they're all integral to the world premiere of the Silk Road Dance Company's "Haft Paykar (The Seven Beauties)," a folkloric ballet based on 12th-century Persian poet Nizami's epic allegory about a prince's search for enlightenment. Silk Road Artistic Director Laurel Victoria Gray's "Seven Beauties" is the centerpiece of an evening of dance from Islamic lands at the Publick Playhouse's World Dance Showcase Saturday. Call 301-277-1710.
Why not pick a man's whole career for your moviegoing plans? Almost all the films of Bertrand Tavernier, from his 1974 "The Clockmaker" to the 2004 "Holy Lola," will be shown starting Friday at the American Film Institute's Silver Theatre. The retrospective concludes April 15. See Film Notes on Page 48.
