The Going Out Gurus: Happy New Year! I hope you've cleaned the fun-fetti out of your ears and are ready to talk with your fingers. What's up for 2004? Well, that's up to you. Alexa, Anne, Fritz, Janet, Jen, Joe, Maura, Rhome and I (Kate) have a few tricks up our sleeve. Jen's excited about the new Landmark Cinema on E Street. Fritz is upbeat about "Speechless," Tone's project at the Warehouse Theatre. And Maura digs Trevor Young's hot mail. Joe knows Mould. Janet has a beauty spot. Alexa knows about Restaurant Week and how to book it. Anne's got a crush on Gym. Rhome's cool as a cucumber, but my name is Gibbs. It's all good. Who's first?

Arlington, Va.: My parents are coming down to DC this weekend for the first time in ages, and we were planning to head out to the Mall on Saturday. Is there anywhere in that vacinity that would be a good lunch choice - mid-range prices, not a chain, etc.? It's going to be freezing, so I don't think we're going to want to walk to far.

The Going Out Gurus: Here are two handy stories, one on the cafeterias in the museums on the Mall (and where you can find gelato, make-your-own Caesar salads or matzoh-ball soup) and one on restaurants that are just off the Mall. How can you find these the next time you want them? Just type "mall dining" in our search box. Easy. -- Anne

Washington, D.C.: Just how metro-accessible are 2 Amys and Cactus Cantina? I'd like to try both but am stuck with the train thing and it's a bit chilly to be trekkin'. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hello DC,

Hmm, it depends on how much you mind walking. You can take the metro to Cleveland Park and walk over to Macomb and then up the hill. It's about a 15-20 minute walk. Or you can take the metro to tenleytown and either walk or catch a bus down Wisconsin. It's really not that bad. Just remember that 2 Amys is closed on Mondays and can be very busy on weekends.

- Joe

Woodley/Cleveland Park, Washington, D.C.: I love my 'hood, but I'm in a restaurant rut: I eat at Spices ALL THE TIME. Because it's awesome and yummy and cheap, and I love it, but what are some other spots in my area that are similarly wallet-minded and fun?
Thanks dudes!

The Going Out Gurus: Surely you are familiar with the "tapas" of Bardeo, those cheap and tasty bites to be enjoyed with a good drink? That is my suggestion to you, unless Indique fits your budget? -- Alexa

_______________________

Woodley Park, Washington, D.C.: Is it true that the VIP Club is closing? Say it ain't so. I also hear the DC government is buying up Home, Platinum and the rest on the block for some big city building. Are the rumors true, and if so, do you think these clubs will relocate? I will surely miss VIP's international Friday nights (open before 11 p.m., live salsa, who can top that?).

Gracias!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Woodley. I haven't heard this particular rumor before, but I'm inclined to disbelieve it -- the clubs are on different sides of the street, and there's so much property there -- not just hotels and clubs, but a lot that's being redeveloped for offices and condos.

I feel bad for the folks who run VIP/Platinum, as they keep hearing rumors about the clubs' demise. They say it's not true, and they'll be there for a while yet. So don't worry, and enjoy your free salsa nights. -- Fritz

Arlington, Va.: Any word on when Bruce Campbell will be appearing at E Street Theater on Friday? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Arlington. Yes, it's very exciting -- the E Street Cinema opens tomorrow. Mr. Campbell will host Q&A's with all screenings of his movie "Bubba Ho-Tep" after 4 p.m. tomorrow, so that includes shows at 4:40, 4:55, 7:10, 7:25, 9:25 and 9:45. Lots of opportunities to hang with Mr. "Evil Dead." And now on to another question about the new theater. -- Jen

College Park, Md.: Gurus,

I'm a jazz club virgin and am thinking of venturing out to Blues Alley. Is this a no-talking affair, do people chat during the performance? What's the crowd typically like? Friendly to neophytes? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hello virgin,

Blues Alley is pretty much a no talking place and serious jazz fans will glower at you if you are chatting during a performance. Even performers have been known to stop playing and tell people in the audience to pipe down. But if you can accept those conditions, Blues Alley is a great place. You might also want to try Twins on U Street and HR-57 on 14th St.

- Joe

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: Hey GOGs, know I'm early, but would it be possible to make Easter brunch reservations already? I was thinking Georgia Brown's... Or is there another place (in DC) I should try?

The Going Out Gurus: I suppose, Dupont, you could simply make a reservation for Sunday, April 11. But few spots will have given thought to their offerings for that day. Georgia Brown's is OK. They'll probably have a buffet. Among places that really tend to do a nice -- if pricy -- job are Melrose, Kennedy Center Roof Terrace, Gabriel... -- Alexa

_______________________

Bethesda, Md.: Any current museum exhibits to recommend? Thanks, and love the chats! Keep up the good work.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Bethesda. No museum exhibit of late has received more lauds than the current Picasso show at the National Gallery. So stop in and see it for yourself before Jan. 18. You've missed Romare Bearden show, but the Eckersberg and French genre exhibits are worth stopping by while you're at the NGA. Personally, I adore the Whistler show at the Freer. It's just two galleries worth, but lovely -- and strikingly modern -- nonetheless. -- Maura

_______________________

Reston, Va.: I'm going downtown Saturday with someone who usually gets his Latin fix at Cafe Citron...any recommendations as to alternatives, not too posh, but funky?

The Going Out Gurus: Ooh La La is an option. It's not too posh but you want to dress decently. You can brave Rumba Cafe if you don't mind a huge crowd packed into a tiny space or Habana Village if you really have a dancing bug. Both of those are really low-key appearance wise (but not energy-wise). - Rhome

Bored in Dupont, Washington, D.C.: Hey GOGs,

Happy New Year!

At the end of the summer, you hinted that Feint, the indie rock queer night that had disbanded last spring, would be reincarnating at Saint-Ex under the name 'Taint'. Yet, no word of this since. Is there any hope that Taint will be a reality, or are we non-mainstream queers stuck with the likes of Cobalt and Velvet Nation?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Dupont. Yes, they were going to take Taint to Saint-Ex, but they really wanted to do it on Sunday nights. Problem is, Saint-Ex already has a regular Sunday night event (a rock night called "Uh Huh!") and it's drawing a crowd and generally doing pretty well. That's why Taint didn't go to Saint-Ex, or so the bar staff says.

It would be nice to see Feint return in some incarnation, as I imagine the Cobalt-Velvet scene must get very tired if you'd rather hang out at the Black Cat or Saint-Ex or Staccato (as it were). Hopefully, the guys who want to do Taint can find a space or come up with some sort of compromise. -- Fritz

_______________________

Sake: Hey! I just wanted to comment on Sake for readers. My advice is GET THERE EARLY (before 11pm)! If you decide to hit other spots in the Morgan first, you'll be out of luck. Sake staff (likely Danny) will let you in, but you have to form a line upstairs, which takes forever! I have been many times, love the club, but made the mistake of going late. I'd prefer if they told you what's really going on inside before making my beau pay cover (though it's only 5 bucks!). Cheers.

The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, good call. This advice goes for a bunch of other popular clubs in Adams Morgan (Reef, Habana Village, etc.). I have never understood why people show up late and expect to waltz in. -- Fritz

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: Is there anywhere in Northern Virginia to get some good oysters? If not, what are the best bets in D.C.? Thanks alot! (BTW, love your chats ... always filled with great ideas!)

The Going Out Gurus: Here's a list of eight or so great places to find oysters. I can't think of a place in Northern Va., except perhaps the Blue Point Grill in Alexandria. As for that list, I'd pick somewhere like Oceanaire. And make a note that Kinkead's is closed for renovations. -- Alexa

Glover Park, Washington, D.C.: Hey Gurus! This new Landmark E Street Theater sounds pretty exciting. Where can I find information about which movies are showing tomorrow and prices?

The Going Out Gurus: We haven't yet received a feed of showtimes for the new Landmark. All of our movie showtimes are sent to us by an outside vendor (perhaps more than you need to know, but there you are); they should start showing up on the site later this afternoon. I can tell you which movies will screen there, though: "Girl with a Pearl Earring," "Monster," "Big Fish," "Bubba Ho-Tep," "My Architect" and "The Battle of Algiers." I took a tour of the place a few weeks ago and will check it out again tonight. It's not quite as spacious as the Bethesda Landmark, mainly because this theater had to be carved into a space beneath an existing building, but it's certainly a welcome addition to that section of town and is very convenient to Metro. If we have a big snowstorm this year, I imagine the place will be packed. -- Jen

_______________________

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: Any idea of what happened to Wazuri? I noticed a for lease sign outside of it.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, we too are perplexed. I thought they had changed their hours for the winter (only open for lunch on weekends), but I don't know about this For Lease rumor. Let's hope not. -- Alexa

_______________________

L Street, Washington, D.C.: Where in town can I go to get an authentic Pisco Sour? Thanx!

The Going Out Gurus: Try Cafe Atlantico. I've had one there, and it was very good. Most bars can't do make the delicious Peruvian drink, though, because they don't stock fresh eggs or egg whites. -- Fritz

Re: 2 Amy's and Cactus Cantina: Any of the 30 buses will take you right down Wisconsin Ave, and the transfer is only $.35!; Don't fear the bus!;

(From a Glover Park loyal bus-rider)

The Going Out Gurus: Yup, we suggested the bus.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: The walk or short bus ride to Cactus is TOTALLY worth it, even for just the margaritas alone! Just my two cents.

The Going Out Gurus: Gracias.

_______________________

McLean, Va.: Posting early - Do you have any ideas for a free or cheap event on Friday night? My boyfriend and I want to get out of the house but have huge financial constraints right now. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Dance clubs ply you with deals on Friday. If you get to Dream early (before 7) on Fridays, and you'll only pay for parking - $10 if you skip the valet. Or, at VIP, women get in free (boys pay $10-15) and there's an open bar, free apps and dance lessons. -- Anne

_______________________

U Street, Washington, D.C.: What do you know about Kingpin? I hang out at so-called indie clubs alot and have heard this is the place to be, but I'm somewhat intimidated by the stairs.

BTW-- what the heck happened to the Saint-Ex crowd? Last time I was there it was all 30+ richie folks.

The Going Out Gurus: Kingpin has been a favorite of mine for a while, although you're right -- those stairs can be treacherous. (I've heard stories about people who had too much to drink and then tried to navigate the narrow stairs. Bad idea.)

It's a very cool, unpretentious place about the size of a one-bedroom apartment, filled with tatty old furniture, cool DJs spinning whatever moves them, good beer and a vintage Atari system. If you hang out at indie clubs, you'll probably recognize a few faces. -- Fritz

_______________________

Unibrow in Bethesda, Md.: Luckily, things are quite that bad....yet, but please help. Any suggestions from you or your fans on places for eyebrow shaping & waxing? Thanks so much!

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, a colleague of mine and myself just went to this fab place called Denude Med. The owner, Nahid, did a wonderful job. I know, I know, it's a bit out of the way, but believe me, worth the journey.

Janet

Washington, D.C.: A recent Ceiba experience: we had reservations for 9:45, and arrived on the dot. We were told, without apology, that it would be 20 minutes before our table would be ready. When we received our entrees, one of them was wrong, and there was no offer to hold them both until the correction was made, nor was there an acknowledgement of the error. It's not an inexpensive place to eat - is this a typical experience there?

The Going Out Gurus: I suppose all restaurants have off days. Don't know what else to tell you except that I really like it there, and find them to be most pleasant. -- Alexa

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus,
I am heading to New York this weekend for a mini-break. Do you have any favorite indoor activities for this very chilly weather? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: While NYC may not be great for parks and walking this weekend, there's plenty to do indoors -- museums, shopping, theater. For exhibits, try the Design Triennial at the Cooper Hewitt, the Egyptian galleries at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, James Rosenquist at the Guggenheim or the baseball show at the Folk Art Museum. It's your last chance to see El Greco at the Met (I'm quite envious) and while Kate would say catch the John Currin show at the Whitney, I say pffft.

As for theater, the Post's own Peter Marks has praised Tony Kushner's "Caroline or Change" as well as "Avenue Q" and "Wicked." For shopping, you're bound to find bargains -- or at least sales -- from Barney's to Century 21. Good luck and have fun. -- Maura

Alexandria, Va.: My boyfriend has amazingly agreed to take salsa lessons, but I think would be more comfortable learning in a class-type setting rather than in a bar or club. Is there anyplace you can recommend? I've looked at the class schedule for the Spanish Ballroom at Glen Echo Park, but their salsa classes are early in the evening during the week and would be difficult for us to get to from Virginia. Any suggestions in Virginia? I've seen ads for salsa lessons at Arthur Murray, but something about that just freaks me out, you know?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey Alexandria, I have nothing but praise for Jeri Dembrak, who teaches salsa classes in Northern Virginia on Sunday and Monday nights. She's one of the finest salsa teachers around. Check out her site, www.thesalsanews.com, as she also lists a few other resources if her classes don't fit your schedule. Another catch-all for the salsa community is www.latin-dance.com, which lists Metro area instructors. -- Fritz

Question about the new theater: Can you recommend any cheap eats by the theater?
Will Bruce Campbell be signing autographs? (should I lug my copy of "If Chins Could Kill" with me?)

The Going Out Gurus: A lot of the restaurants near the Landmark tend to fall on the pricier end of the spectrum. You could try Chef Geoff's, maybe, which isn't too far away (just across from the Warner). Campbell's not specifically there to sign autographs, but I'm guessing that he'd be willing to scrawl his name on a copy of "Chins." It's worth the lug if you're a big fan. You also might try going to one of the earlier "Bubba" screenings, since he may be less likely to be mobbed then. -- Jen

Birthday girl!;: Hi Gurus, My birthday is on Tuesday and I haven't found a restaurant to celebrate it in. I'm open to any cuisine, the only caveat being I'm a vegetarian. Around $100 for two and bonus if it's romantic. Any suggestions? thank you!;

The Going Out Gurus: Say no more, Birthday Girl. Just hope that you can still make a reservation. The last time I was at Restaurant Nora, my friend and I kept waiting to see who would sit down at the table for two with the vase of long-stemmed red roses. The couple who claimed it sure looked lover-ly. The food does too. There should be at least two veg options for you. Soft lights, soft linens, framed quilts on the wall, it's all quietly classy. Wine will run you over your $100, so choose carefully. -- Anne

Arlington, Va.: The in-laws are coming into town and want to take us out to a "very-nice" restaurant. However, as they will be in mid-cross-country road trip, they do not want to dig out fancy clothes from the suitcases. Where do you recommend we get a top tier dinner in the NoVa or DC area in nice casual attire (no jeans, of course)?

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Arlington. Let's think. Those in-laws of yours probably don't want to jostle with crowds after a long drive, but even so, I'm going to recommend the Carlyle Grand in Shirlington. It's a fine place, reliably good, glamorous after a recent makeover and not expensive. Depending on when you go, you might have a wait, but they give you a buzzer, so you could have a drink at the smoothy bar. Another place that comes to mind: 2941 in Falls Church -- impressive but casual and not too pricey. -- Alexa

SWF in Washington, D.C.: I want to meet boys. Attractive, smart, witty-as-hell boys, preferably in that wonderfully subtly way we all eventually do find The Other. Any suggestions this weekend on where to stumble upon Mr. 2004 in all of his glory? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Hmmm...SWF, that might be a tall order for one weekend. If you can wait a week, our new dating guide may have some answers for you (or at least a few helpful hints).

In the meantime, I'd say just go out and have fun doing the things you -- and hopefully Mr. 2004 -- like to do (volunteering, hiking, playing pool, listening to music or anything else that can spur a bit of conversation). Of course, maybe some readers out there have their own ideas on where to meet -- or never find -- The Other. -- Maura

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I am meeting up with a friend/date for a drink tonight. Any ideas as to where to go? Someplace in the downtown area would be good. Dupont could also work. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: What kind of atmosphere are you looking for, and do you care how much you spend? If I had a date tonight around Dupont, and I was looking to impress her (and, more importantly, be able to have a conversation), I'd try to get a couch in front of the roaring fire at the Tabard Inn -- perfect atmosphere for a date on a chilly night. Otherwise, maybe get a small table and cocktail at Savino Lounge -- it's usually not too bad there, but it can be pricey. Same goes for the sleek bar at Dragonfly: It's a chill atmosphere early on, but not easy on the wallet.

If you're meeting early, Topaz has $5 cocktails until 7, and Cafe Citron's basement-level bar has happy hour mojitos.

Downtown, think Le Bar, Ortanique, Town and Country Lounge, maybe John Harvard's if you'd just like a beer. Other suggestions, readers? -- Fritz

Arlington, Va.: I want to take my family to see a comedy show, but not stand-up, since it is too adult-oriented (but also not something that is too geared towards young children, as I am entertaining two teen-agers as well). Help!

The Going Out Gurus: Sounds like you should check out Washington Improv Theater. Their shows aren't too adult-oriented, and they use suggestions from the audience to build scenes during some of their performances. They perform at D.C. Arts Center, and their next shows are January 16 and 17 at 10 p.m., although that may be past some people's bedtimes. Check out their Web site, though; they schedule shows at earlier times, too. -- Jen

Cube City, D.C.: GOG's,
I know its kinda early but I want to get some ideas flowing. A group of friends and I are going to a play at the Warner on Jan 25th, and what to make a night of it afterwards. We like dancing and hip hop, but would be willing to try something new (outside of VIP). Any suggestions??? We're 21-24 in age, if that helps. Something in D.C. would be preferred where there is a party atmosphere. Oh, and by the way, we'll probably get out of the show by 10:30. Thanks so much; love the chats!;

The Going Out Gurus: The 25th is a Sunday night, party atmosphere is in short supply. You can check out Red but only if you're trying to get your serious dance on 'til the wee hours to house music. Five has hip-hop and go-go on Sundays. H.E.R. will give you the unvarnished (non-commercial) hip-hop without the dancing. Maybe you all should go chill somewhere instead of partying hard? - Rhome

Kalorama, Washington, D.C.: Hey Gurus,

Love the chat each week. I have a friend who recently bought a house in Capitol Hill. We would like to take him out in the neighborhood for dinner and some drinks. Somewhere fun with some live music would be a huge bonus. Thanks for the help.

The Going Out Gurus: You won't find much live music on the Hill, Kalorama, but one exception is the new(ish) Finn Mac Cool's on 8th Street SE's Barracks Row. It's a gorgeous Irish pub that replaced Sherridan's last month, and after a somewhat rocky start, seems to be doing well. Service is still choppy, but overall, I'm happy with it. They have live Irish music -- usually a bloke and his guitar -- on Friday and Saturday nights after 9. Beamish stout is great, and the menu is short but adequate. -- Fritz

NW Washington, D.C.: Dearest, Wisest Gurus (and everyone else following the chat),

My adored 20 year old, vegetarian friend is coming to visit for the weekend. She has impeccable taste and is accustomed to partying like she's 21. Do you have any insight as to where I can take her for a really swank lunch on Friday (preferably in/near Dupont) AND where we can go out this weekend without her feeling patronized?

Many thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Raku carries high style without the high price -- it does the funky sushi with the frenzy of a diner, and it's often jammed. Newcomer Komi on 17th Street sounds promising, too. They present you house-made free lollipops (does she like pomegranate?). Isn't that sweet? -- Anne

Dupont, Washington, D.C., 20008: Hey Guru's-

This arctic freeze is really getting to me, and I want a reminder of summer. Tell me (before I do something foolish)--does Mystic Tan look real?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Dupont,
I know how you feel and am thinking of doing the same. Here are some suggestions.--Janet

_______________________

Downtown Washington, D.C.: Gotta disagree with your opinion on Kingpin. They have one bartender there who's a real jerk. I've been in there a couple times, and both times I apparently wasn't dressed "indie" enough for him (meaning I didn't buy my clothes from a flea market or thrift shop), so he and his holier-than-thou friends simply made fun of us the whole time we were there (about 20 minutes both times). I've heard from others who have had the same experience.

The Going Out Gurus: Wow. Sorry about that, Downtown. I don't buy my clothes at thrifts or fleas (usually), but everyone's been pretty cool to me and my friends. -- Fritz

_______________________

What's up with Ray's the Steaks?: It seems to have become a victim of its popularity. It's somehow gone from a casual place to get a great steak to a place that's muddled by odd owner rules. Went last week and the restaurant apparently doesn't open for dinner until 6 p.m., and reservations are needed at least a few days in advance???!;!;!;

The Going Out Gurus: Eek! And we thought it was madness when he took the burger off the menu.

_______________________

American University, Washington, D.C.: I had a very different experience last time I went to Nora. There were no veggie entrees and the service was quite poor.

It would be good to call in advance and check about veg-food, I think.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the tip. You're right, it's always good to call ahead, veg-wise.

_______________________

Re: Cactus: If you live close to 18th, Lauriol Plaza is same ownership as Cactus Cantina and very similar menu. Margaritas don't seem to pack quite as strong a punch, though...

The Going Out Gurus: Sounds like something Fritz should investigate. Stat.

_______________________

For Arlington - nice restaurant: Ray's the Steaks!;!; Awesome food, and you can wear almost anything.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Rays!

_______________________

Alexandria, Va.: Hey Gurus, are your discussions from last year archived? If so, where's the link--sorry, but I can't find it with the new layout. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, the template has been temporarily rocked. It'll be fixed this afternoon. Cheers.

_______________________

re: Carlyle Grand: Carlyle Grand also has call ahead seating which can reduce your wait time significantly.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, and they have chocolate waffles.

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: Going to the Velvet Lounge on Saturday for the first time to see my new favorite band. Last time I saw them was at Iota which I really like a lot. Is the Velvet similar? How "cool" do I need to be to be comfortable?

The Going Out Gurus: Cool enough to order Schlitz in a can for $2, and cool enough to deal with the narrow upstairs venue and somewhat ramshackle downstairs bar. Still, the place has an odd indie charm. "Cool" is always in the eye of the beholder, but I'd leave the khakis and Abercrombie cap at home. -- Fritz

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: Hi GoGs! We ate at Rosa Mexicano last Friday night, and had a great experience. The house margaritas are awesome - I'm not usually a huge fan of the frozen varieties but these are fabulous. The food is good, if a little expensive, and I loved the guac! Definitely will be back.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the rosy rec.

_______________________

Clarendon, Va.: Janet, How much do they charge for an eyebrow wax at the Annandale place you recommended? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Actually, they don't do waxing, only tweezing. The charge is $25. Nahid is an artist. -- Janet

_______________________

For free or cheap on Friday?: How about the Imax and Jazz Cafe at the Natural History Museum? Food can get pricey if you want to have a full dinner, but it's get your own cafeteria style and there is no cover.

The Going Out Gurus: Nice get. It is easy to control the cost at the National Museum of Natural History.

Petworth, Washington, D.C.: Showtimes for the new E Street Cinema are up at their webpage at http://www.landmarktheatres.com/

An outside vendor? That explains why they are always so late. (begin vent mode) Not only at the Post but at the City Paper and at the movie sites, movie times have started to come out later and later, making it impossible to plan ahead, even a few days ahead. This is annoying, and the theaters and the vendors need to fix this. (end vent mode)

So, any of you guys seen "Bubba Ho-Tep" yet? What do you think of it?

The Going Out Gurus: Believe me, Petworth, it's beyond frustrating that we sometimes have to wait to get our showtimes. There are a lot of reasons for this: sometimes movie theaters don't finalize their showtimes early enough or various technical glitches arise as the vendor tries to send the times to us. Of course, when an innocent user comes to washingtonpost.com and can't find showtimes, it reflects badly on us when often, the reason for the delay is beyond our control. It's something I'll continue to work on because I'd like to fix this, too.
Haven't seen "Bubba" yet; the review in tomorrow's Weekend says the movie is a little silly but that Campbell's Elvis is a stitch. -- Jen

D.C. Open Mic Nights: Hi GoGs,

I'm looking for info on local open mic nights. In particular, we need them to be able to accomodate an acoustic (amplified) guitar and keyboard (or if they have a piano, that would be even better). Any ideas?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hello DC,

You should give the folks at Staccato (on 18th St. in Adams Morgan) a call. They have open mic night on Tuesday and have a piano. You can also try Iota in Arlington. It has open mic night every Wednesday. Anyone else want to recommend a good open mic night?

Joe

Washington, D.C.: HELLO Gurus!!
As usual I've waited till the last minute to plan something fun for my mom's b'day. She'll turn 55 on Saturday and I'd like to find something entertaining to do with her other than the usual dinner celebration. Any fabulous suggestions? THANKS!~

The Going Out Gurus: And her birthday's Saturday? Mamma Mia! Exactly. As someone who saw it on Mother's Day, I'd say it's a show that welcomes multi-generational audiences. The story, if you can call it that, is about connecting with your mom (okay, sort of). And you can save on full-price seats by getting day-of tickets Ticketplace. Sometimes it pays to go last-minute. -- Jen

Cyberspace, USA: A shopping question for Janet --

Do you know of anywhere where I can find those trendy suede boots for cheap? I found a really cute paif of mid-calf suede ones with ballerina ties at a pricey dept. store, but do not want to pay 150 bucks. Maybe Loehmann's?

The Going Out Gurus: The last time I was in Loehmann's (before Christmas), they had lots of boots for very reasonable prices. Since they're in post-holiday mode, I imagine they prices would even be better, but the selection might not be as great. Another place to try is Zelaya. It's at the back of Daisy, and I've found that they have very good prices on all their shoes. Also, what about DSW?

Bethesda, Md.: Happy New Year, Gurus!

Comment and question:

I visited the new Uvar-Hazy Center at Dulles a few weekends ago. Much as been made of the $50, 1-year parking pass - but one STILL has to pay $12 to get into the facility's parking lot. Only then can one purchase the one year pass (apparently, it's sold only at the Uvar-Hazy Center). Personally, I find this false and deceptive advertising, but that's just me.

Question: I have friends coming into town this weekend. They are -big- crab fans, but don't have the time to go to Baltimore or Anapolis. I remember that there was some sort of crab restaurant in Bethesda - a dive-ish sort of place that had lots of crabs really cheap. I can't remember the name of the place. Could the all-knowing Gurus help me (and my equally poor friends) out?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: I'll answer this in reverse order, Bethesda.

First, if they're good friends, now may not be the time to take them out for crabs (Bethesda Crab House is the place you're thinking of). Crabs are rather off-season at the moment, but you can still find great seafood and probably a good crabcake or two at Johnny's Half Shell, Black's or Oceannaire to name a few. Just take a look at our picks for seafood favorites.

As for Udvar-Hazy, according to Smithsonian Information, they're no longer selling the year-long pass. I know that parking lot is a major hassle, Bethesda and you have my sympathies, but don't forget you can always take the free shuttle from the downtown museum out to the Dulles facility. -- Maura

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: Sorry, the Wazuri location is definitely For Rent. I walk past it on my way to work every day.

So excited about the E St. theatre! Between there, and G'town, and what I hear is an upcoming screenorama at Gallery Place, the District will finally have some great newer locations. In addition to the fabulous old ones like the Uptown, of course. How long do you think they'll be playing Return of the King? Til April?

The Going Out Gurus: It really is a movie renaissance around here. Lots of new theaters in D.C., as you said, plus new ones like Fairfax Corner opening in the 'burbs, too. I (Jen) expect "King" to be at the Uptown for a good, long while. It's still selling out shows and with Oscar nominations coming later this month, it's unlikely that interest in the movie will wane. Unlike "Seabiscuit," this is a case where the theater would be silly not to let it ride for a while.

Washington, D.C.: Hello!

Have a couple of questions that i hope you can help me with:
First of all, where could I go to watch Italian soccer matches in the District? My team is in the lead and I don't want to miss out...

Also, looking for free salsa lessons, but don't have anyone to go with. Where could I go that would not be too sketchy to show up as a single girl?

Finally, any thoughts on Mendocino Bar and Grill?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: 1. In the District? Lucky Bar used to show them, but I don't see any Serie A on their schedule. Summers usually has all the RAI games, though. I've seen the Rome derby there. If anyone has better ideas, please let us know, because I'd love to send people somewhere besides Summers.

2. Clarendon Grill and Lucky Bar have salsa lessons on Monday nights, and aren't that sketchy. I heard bad things from one female friend about the free lessons at VIP -- being hit on, etc.

3. I like Mendocino's wines by the glass. Not thrilled with the overall bar, though. Other thoughts from the crowd? -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: I see that you mentioned that Coyote Ugly is coming to DC. Do you have any more details on this?

The Going Out Gurus: Opening in mid-February in the Rock's old spot on 6th Street, across from the MCI Center. Bartender auditions are on Wednesday -- see "This Week in Nightlife" for more information. -- Fritz

Old Skool Punk: Kingpin gets a big thumbs down. Sorry if I have a job now and can afford pants that aren't torn....doesn't mean I don't like Minor Threat, Minutemen, and other rokkin' bands!;

The Going Out Gurus: Okay. So where do you go, then?

RE: Ooh La La: Ooh La La is closed temporarily for remodeling and changes. So it is a no-go for Saturday.

The Going Out Gurus: Oops la la!

Avoiding real work, Washington, D.C.: GOG's, I'm interested in some reasonably priced cooking classes. I've tried searching WP.com, but have come up empty. Help!

The Going Out Gurus: After a bit of tinkering with the electrics, I have this for you. Hope it helps. -- Alexa

Washington, D.C.: Is there a single place to go that lists all the live-performance offerings at local colleges and univeristies? I've tried trolling through each school's web site, but it's taking forever. Specifically, I'm looking for spring musicals, but it would be nice to know what else is going on without a ton of serching.

Long live affordable theater!

The Going Out Gurus: We list a few college performances on our site, but not in one long list. You can try searching by schools on our site and see what comes up. It's hard for us to list all university shows since there are so many professional ones in the area to maintain. The Potomac Stages Web site also lists shows, though I don't think they delve too deeply into the college scene either. Anyone have other suggestions? -- Jen

Washington, D.C.: I just want to caution readers to avoid planning to eat at Felix on a Sunday (referring to Fritz's article last week). It would probably be fine to just grab a drink- although the tv screens are small and placed fairly high which means a hal-hour of standing and jostling and neck-craning- but I had a miserable, overpriced and under-serviced dining experience there last season.

The Going Out Gurus: Sorry to hear that, Washington. My reservation about dining there is that you're sitting, everyone else is standing, which means sightlines can be blocked -- I'll take a standing spot by the bar (or, better yet, in Spy Lounge) anyday. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: Any advice on where to watch the Eagles game on Sunday with fellow Birds fans?

Thanks so much!

The Going Out Gurus: The Rhino Bar and Pumphouse has been a quasi-official Eagles-watching bar all season long. If anyone has other suggestions, I'll post them here. -- Fritz

Kalorama, Washington, D.C. - About the Velvet and Kingpin: I like the Velvet warts and all. I go at least once every other week to catch bands whether I have heard of them or not. One thing that I can't stand is when the doorman requires you to say what band you are there to see. Can't someone just go out and try to find new music? Why this stupid policy? That's my only real beef with the Velvet, I like the ramshackle atmosphere. And about Kingpin, the one bartender is a total indie-snob wannabe jerk but the rest of the folks seem nice as pie, (and I love pie).

The Going Out Gurus: Mmmm, pie.

For the Birthday Girl: Anne?!; You are recommending Nora?!; (Tom would be unhappy with you) Did you read her question? Nora is quite pricey (likely to be more like $150 before tax/tip), and my visits there have met with uneven results, food-wise. Asia Nora, on the other hand is a good veg bet. As is Yanyu, and both are a bit cheaper, with good food. Non-asian? Try Indique.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for chiming in. Our Birthday Girl sounds eager to hear from your expertise. Personally, I've found Yanyu disappointing. She can definitely get a meal at Nora for her price range; she just can't order willy-nilly. I like Asia Nora, too, but mostly for the lavender ice cream. And Indique I prefer for groups. But that's just me. Write back next week and ask Maura -- she's planning an Indique visit soon. -- Anne

Bethesda, Md.: Hi Gurus, I'm new to the area ... actually the east coast as well, and I am really wanting to take a weekend trip to NY. Do you have any tips on how to do that most cost-effectively? Also, I really want to see a broadway show - thinking of wicked, are there discount ways to score tickets? Thanks so much, I've already learned a lot from your awesome chats!

The Going Out Gurus: Bethesda, the bus is the cheapest route, but our friend Kim O'Donnel just informed us yesterday that there is a $118 round trip to La Guardia ($106 to Newark) on United. For the time you save, that might be the best bet. Check for details here.

As for discount theater tickets, try one of the tkts booths. I've had luck there before. -- Maura

Re: Mendocino: I'm a big fan. I'm not a big wine snob, but I've never been disappointed by anything there, but aside from the wine list, the food really deserves a mention. I've always had wonderful food there. If you want to investigate on the cheap, try their lunch special. 3 courses AND a glass of wine for $20!;

The Going Out Gurus: That is a capital-D Deal.

Vegetarian-ville: For the person looking for veggie ideas, try www.VegDC.com for many fabulous options. The 20-year-old would probably like the Black Cat (many delicious options at the cafe), but they do, of course, card people, so could be an issue if she likes to drink. And for fancy vegetarian food, I -love- the Soul Vegetarian Gourmet restaurant located (unfortunately) in Largo, MD. It's a really annoying, crappy, faraway location, but food is delicious and atmosphere is very classy. Do not confuse with the Georgia Ave Soul Veg, where the food is still very good, but the atmosphere is not classy.

The Going Out Gurus: And here's some more to chew on, for veggie friends.

Fiasco in 20009: Here's the situation--meet boy at home over X-mas, boy flies to DC to visit, turns out I don't like boy, boy still here for a couple of days after I've given the "just friends" notice. So I've taken tomorrow off and still want to have a good day with him, just fun and around town. Hoping to have a solid plan and one that wouldn't leave anyone regretting their decision to visit. Any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: You left out the crucial element... where is boy staying? This one is an ouchie. Truthfully, it really doesn't matter what y'all do as long as you both get your minds right respectively (you - no stank attitude, him - chin up and not defeated). If the energy between you two is still brimming with subtext, don't waste either of your time. Well, when this one cat I know who isn't Rhome had an ex pop into town out of nowhere who wanted to give mixed signals, he took her to a few gallery/museum exhibits he'd been meaning to see, then they went music and used book shopping. Keeping it cultural/intellectual helps to hold the line. - Rhome

Arlington, Va.: Happy 2004 GOGs! I'm hoping you can help me with plans for this weekend. My boyfriend's parents are coming to town and we desperately need plans for Saturday night. The parents like theater, comedy and sports. We did Capital Steps during their last visit--big success. Any ideas for things that would be just as fun going on in the District or NoVa this weekend? Thanks so much!

The Going Out Gurus: Is this a thinly disguised plug for Comedy Sportz? Guess it worked.

The Going Out Gurus: As "free" is a popular word around here, plug away.

Rockville, Md.: Going out for a 2 year anniversary celebration with my boyfriend tonight...I'm looking for a movie theater that also serves dinner/drinks/dessert in the area. I'd love it if they showed something other than mainstream movies. There used to be one somewhere in Gaithersburg that I went to in high school but I don't know if its still around. We're open to DC locations too! Thanks GOGs!

The Going Out Gurus: I remember that Gaithersburg theater, too, but it closed several years ago. You might try Visions in D.C. (they have a nice bar in the theater) or possibly the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse, though that may not be the best for an anniversary. If you want to stay in Montgomery County, the Kentlands theater recently added a lounge area; I believe after a certain hour you can also take wine and beer into the theater. There's always the AFI Silver, too, though you can't quite eat dinner there. Still, a lovely theater that shows interesting films. -- Jen

Way out in Va.: Hey Gurus,
My birthday is this Saturday. My husband and a bunch of my friends are taking me out Friday night (drinks, music, etc.) and my hubby is planning something romantic for 2 on Saturday. Here's my problem: We just bought a house (YEAH!) in Haymarket (boo!) and so my usual plans of hanging in D.C. is not as appealing as it used to be. Any suggestions for a night out with friends in the Northern Va. area (Tysons, Reston, Fairfax) for a girl that loves the city. In my fantasy its a fabulous little club with good drinks and great music (jazz, blues, r&b). I am desperate please help save my birthday from boring surburbia or worse yet and hour long drive into D.C. Thanks guys!

The Going Out Gurus: Way Out -- how about Bangkok Blues in Falls Church? They have live blues and R&B every Friday night in a cozy little restaurant/club, and they make pretty good drinks. Basin Street Lounge in Sterling is another good bet, with blues or rock on Friday nights, plus fairly good martinis. -- Fritz

Alexandria, Va.: For the person looking for Pisco sours--Cafe Salsa on King St does a mean one--fresh (pasteurized) egg whites and the weekday bartender is Peruvian!

The Going Out Gurus: Brilliant. Thanks, Alexandria.

Zelaya is expensive: Sorry to say it, but if this girl is looking for boots under $150, she won't find them at Zelaya. They're all very nice, but also quite pricey.

The Going Out Gurus: Zelaya is not cheap, but I've found that you can get some good buys. I got a pair of Uggs for $125 before Christmas. -- Janet

Washington, D.C.: Submitting early due to a meeting. My husband and I were thinking about volunteering at a homeless sheleter or a soup kitchen. Do you have a list of these places in DC?? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: We can point you to the clearinghouse organizations. Touch D.C. lets you search for your interest and where you want to volunteer. For example, here's some soup kitchen-type options in D.C. D.C. Cares is also a good place to check for volunteer opportunities. -- Anne

Arlington, Va.: Happiest of New Years to the GOGs. I want to get away... to DC. Fancy pants hotel, spa, salon, that sort of experience. Money no object! Will it might be, but I want to know all the deets so I can check out the finer side of hotel living in my hometown. Hook my up and I will be forever grateful!

The Going Out Gurus: Good for you, Arlington. The Four Seasons should be posh enough for you. Otherwise try the Ritz at 22nd and M (they should have more options than the smaller Ritz in Georgetown) or the Watergate Hotel.

If you can wait until Valentine's Day, you might find some special package deals, but if you can't hold out any longer, we understand. -- Maura

Old Skool Punk: Asylum....during the week it's good, but weekends get rough, so I actually go to Marx cafe...

The Going Out Gurus: Ah, that makes sense. But I know people who've gotten similar "You're not a bike messenger or biker" vibes at Asylum. Marx Cafe, though, is really cool.

Arlington, Va.: Oh great Gurus: I want to watch my Colts play the Chiefs on Sunday. I got to sports bars some, but although some have big screens, I don't think I've been to any in Arlington with audio I could actually hear. Is there somewhere you'd recommend? (Metro accessible in Arlington best) Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Take a short drive over to the State Theatre -- they're showing all the playoff games on a high-definition 24-foot movie screen. State has an awesome sound system, so you're sure to be able to hear. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: I have to say I'm a little disappointed in the list for Restaurant Week this time around. I have visited the websites for a few of the one's I would be interested like say Georgia Browns and the restaurant menus are SO limited. Last time I went to TenPenh and their selections and service were fabulous. I'm looking to recreate that treat with a new location. Any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, I tend to agree. I often think that newer places will tend to give the best band for the buck, trying to put on a good face and pull in folk who might usually stay away. So in this vein, I'd say somewhere like Ceiba might be good, or Dish. Otherwise, I tend to feel that while Restaurant Week is good for dinner, a $20 lunch is never really a bargain. -- Alexa

Arlington, Va.: If you were going to spend a Friday in January patronizing some of DC's classier restaurant bars with 5 to 10 close friends, what would your recommended itenerary be? We're not looking to get rowdy mind you. We're classy, that's why we want to patronize the classy establishments to drink classy drinks.

The Going Out Gurus: A Friday? I might not go on a Friday, as that's when most big restaurants turn their bars into holding pens for the people waiting for tables. But if I was ... the art-deco bar at Oceanaire would be on the last, as would the old-money Palm, TehPenh's Asian-inspired cocktail menu (I adore their Singapore Sling) -- although Kate thinks it's pricey. Try DC Coast or Zola, too, and I've enjoyed the cocktails and small bites at both Ceiba and Zaytinya. -- Fritz

Missing Boston: Hi GOGs, can you tell me where in the area (preferably NoVa, but D.C.'s fine, too) Pats fans might be gathered to watch Saturday night's freezefest? Thanks, and stay warm!

The Going Out Gurus: The one-and-only Murphy's Irish Pub in Old Town has been THE place for Pats fans for years. Go there or be square. -- Fritz

Woodley Park, Washington, D.C.: Saturday is one of my friend's birthday and we'd like to take her somewhere where we can dance. Dream is out but we're considering VIP, Red, and whatever other suggestions you have. We'd like to go somewhere where we can just talk if we want a break from dancing and where we can avoid paying a cover (we're willing to go early) and won't break the bank on drinks. Thanks

The Going Out Gurus: Five always comes up but there's a reason for it. Music Makes Magic is always a consistent Saturday option for dancing, especially for the best national and international house DJ talent they book. Right below Five is Andalu but if it's crowded you'll have less luck getting away from the dancefloor for conversation. VIP won't meet your spending requirements, but it is a fun destination on nights when you feel like doing it up big. I've been hitting Bar Nun on Friday nights occasionally and it's been turning into a nice location that's equally split between dancing and lounging. I'll find out what's up on Saturdays if you'd like to come back for more info for future excursions. If you really want to think differently, try Sanctuary. You'll spend very little on drinks and they've got a seperate lounge area upstairs. It's not your typical club experience, though, especially since it's away from the main hot spots. No extra frou-frou, just music and dancing. - Rhome

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: I'm moving out of beloved AM to 16th and Q, and was wondering if you could suggest some neighborhoody type places that I can visit during the week (i.e. Toledo Lounge, Adam's Mill when they're not filled to the brim). I'm not a huge Fox and Hounds fan. And, do you have any other cool restaurants, etc that I should be checking out. I'm somewhat budget minded. Many thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Larry's Lounge is a longtime favorite of ours, as is the Townhouse Tavern. Cheep beer and great pool, plus a cozy atmosphere that (in my book, at least) beats saving on cheap bathtub gin at Fox and Hounds any day. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: I went to Denude Med to get my eyebrows done last week. What the Gurus aren't telling you is that it's actually a doctor's office (or at least it looks like one) not a "day spa" as has been mentioned. They don't accept tips and they do a fabulous job, so you are getting a great value for $25.

The Going Out Gurus: We're all about value. And waxing.

RE: Woodley Park: Uhh, Rhome, are you sure you want to send them to Bar Nun on Saturday night? Isn't that the Entrez Nous party?

The Going Out Gurus: True! I almost forgot. I won't front though, the Entre Nous folks throw a good party... thumbs up! You'll just want to know what's up before you decide to step inside. "Informed consent" and all. - Rhome

Ballston, Va.: Hi, gurus. Is there anywhere in the city or Arlington to get my Zen on, you know, feel the Tao? I mean like a peaceful, preferrably Oriental style garden. Somewhere I can escape (and that doesn't mean heading out to Fairfax) for a couple hours here or there. I though there would be some kind of Chinese garden in Chinatown, but I haven't heard of any. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: What about Georgetown's idyllic Ching Ching Cha?

And now, we must be Going Going Gone. Let's do this again next week. Same time. Same place.
