Fairfax Emergency Center to Open

Fairfax County leaders soon won't have to travel far if there's an emergency. The Alternate Emergency Operations Center is scheduled to open today on the ground floor of the government building.

The center will include 4,000 square feet of computers, phones and other communications equipment from which local officials can coordinate recovery efforts in case of a damaging storm, terrorist attack or other emergency.

Officials said the center cost about $3 million, covered mostly by homeland security grants.

The center temporarily replaces a much smaller facility at the former Pine Ridge Elementary School in Annandale. In 2007, a new emergency operations and 911 center is scheduled to open on West Ox Road.
