Got Plans?

The Going Out Gurus
of the washingtonpost.com Entertainment Guide
Thursday, April 7, 2005; 1:00 PM

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions.

The Going Out Gurus: The Cherry Blossoms are out and, for the moment anyway, it's not raining. Enjoy it while you can. Or stay indoors and chat with us. Gang's all here and we're already inundated with questions from you good people. Let's go.

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: Please answer this, I have asked this for over a month now in the dining chat and got no answer there or here...

Are there any resturants other than Windows Over Washington that have views of D.C.?

Alexa: You sound as if you're wanting a big ariel view in which case the answer is "no." There's a Doubletree hotel (I think) in Rosslyn that has a restaurant up top. But their food may not be much cop. If something Washington-y seen in plain view of the window would do then Charlie Palmer Steak sits in the shadow of the Capitol dome.

Washington, D.C.: What is the big deal with Indebleu? I went and was very underwhelmed. Very sterile, super expensive cocktails, HORRIBLE food and the crowd was dull. However, I do really like Chloe as long as you get there early and don't have to stand in line. I hope they don't ruin it by pretending they are more VIP than they really are. I noticed the ratio of men to women leans WAYYY more towards more men ... and pretty ethnically diverse. Has anyone else noticed that? My real question, where should I hang out this Saturday night? I'm not looking for a clubby place, more of a chill atmosphere where I can still meet people ... in D.C. ... Thanks!

Fritz: The big deal with IndeBleu is that it has really great (pricey) cocktails, decent food, good DJs and -- if you go early in the week -- a cool lounge where you can relax. If you go on the weekends, though, yeah, you may be underwhelmed, especially with the guest-list-only policy on Fridays (which you can circumvent by arriving early).

As for Chloe -- I've got a review out tomorrow in Weekend, but I agree that the key to enjoying the place is arriving early and missing the horrible line, where everyone claims to know a bartender/manager or have friends inside, or gets frustrated and leaves. The line leans way toward men because they often let women skip to the front and go inside -- I've seen it happen on several occasions -- so the line gets testosterone-heavy. But you're right about the diverse crowd, which, sadly, doesn't happen much in Adams Morgan.

Bethesda, Md.: Anyone tried the new Bethesda restaurant called Rock Creek (on Elm near Ri-Ra and Cafe Deluxe)?

Jen: I stopped in a few weeks back to have a drink, but we didn't try any of the food. I liked the bar area and the environment, although drinks are a bit pricey. But then that's true in most of Bethesda. I'd say it's worth a try at least. Anyone else been there and care to offer their two cents?

_______________________

Alexandria, Va.: I am moving to Chicago after three years living in the DC area. I'm planning to gather a bunch of friends (30-50 people) for one last night on the town. I've called a bunch of places in Arlington and D.C., looking for a bar that has space that you can reserve (for free) on a Saturday night for a group. Any suggestions? I don't want a closed-off private room per se ... I'm just looking for a cool space. I've heard Andalu and Felix are good spots. I'd love to hear any recommendations from those who have hosted parties in D.C./Arlington before. Thanks!

Maura: The Blue Room, Childe Harold and Arlington's Cafe Asia are all options - with upstairs or back rooms (Cafe Asia is one that's not wholly closed off). If you can promise a minimum bar tab, the room might be free. Any other party-planners have suggestions?

_______________________

Princeton, N.J.: Love the chats! I recently moved out to Princeton, N.J. for work from D.C. I was a huge fan of your discussions while living in D.C. Do you know of anything similar that reports on events in NYC?

Joe: Not an online chat, but TimeOut New York and the Village Voice both have great listings for NYC.

_______________________

Not really "going out" but...: Might Janet or someone know where I can get backings for earrings? I have some stud earrings with screw-on backs, one of which I lost under the bed, and it's way too dusty under there for me to find it ... any ideas where I could buy a new backing? Thanks!

Janet: Is there a jewelry store near you? You might have some luck there. There are also places like Fire & Ice that sell them.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hiya!

Love the chats. With the great wealth of restaurants in D.C., including many Asian ones, was just wondering if you could recommend a good Indonesian restaurant.

Thanks!

Alexa: Straits of Malaya? There are more than a handful of Indonesian dishes on the menu at Cafe Asia. And then there's Penang in Bethesda. Oh, and Malaysia Kopitiam.

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: My fiance and I grew up in the D.C.-area and have a pretty good idea of the hottest night spots, and best eats ... but, tomorrow night we are planning to go out on a date and we are at a loss. We are looking for some suggestions for a nice night out that's not your typical dinner-at-a-greaet-Thai-place-and-a-movie ... any ideas?

Erin: Well, in the spirit of the Cherry Blossom Festival, you could go out to dinner at one of the many restaurants offering cherry blossom specials and walk the tidal basin at night. If you're interested in theater, "Omnium Gatherum" is getting rave reviews.

_______________________

CUA/Brookland: Went to Bricks last night to drink beer and watch the Phils/Nats game on the roof deck. Not only was the roof deck closed, but the game wasn't even broadcast. At least they had beer. So for future reference, where else could I find an bar to watch a game outside, preferably within the city limits?

Fritz: I've heard some people are trying. I know that several sports bars, from Summers to Grevey's, are getting the MLB Extra Innings package in hopes of showing the out-of-market games, but our lack of a TV deal means Nats fans are out of luck at the moment.

Outdoor televisions aren't as common in D.C. as they are in the burbs; my picks would be the roof at Bricks (which I was told will open as soon as they de-winterize it) or Island Jim's Crab Shack and Tiki Bar. I think there are some outdoor TVs at Sequoia, too.

_______________________

Metrolife, Washington, D.C.: Gurus ... any tips on hip clothing / shopping in DC.. I know they are out there but haven't found much beyond the -- little too safe -- Banana Republic. I need cute spring shoes also. Can you help a sister out?

Janet: Take a stroll in the U Street corridor. Wild Women Wear Red has lots of funky shoes and some clothing; Nana has new as well as vintage items.

_______________________

Glover Park, Washington, D.C.: Happy Spring, Gurus,

May the force be with you. Yep, that's right, I'm a "Star Wars" nerd. How can I find out about any fan activities happening around town? Theme parties, gatherings, drink specials, anything at all. I need a Jedi mind trick something awful. -- Obi Wan A Hobby

Jen: Hi, Obi Wan. We will have a "Star Wars" package on the site in the coming weeks as people gear up for the last "Star Wars" movie ever ... that is, until George Lucas releases them all in 3-D. I don't know about any gatherings or parties at the moment. But if others do, please e-mail me. I'd love to include them in our Jedi extravaganza.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I read on their Web site that Bloc Party had to cancel their show in Philly the other night because Kele had lost his voice. Any word on whether this affects the sold-out show this Saturday at Black Cat? Thanks!

David: Yes, Bloc Party did indeed cancel their show in Philadelphia last night because singer Kele Okereke lost his voice. Now you may say, "But I saw them on Letterman last night and his voice sounded fine?" But Dave often tapes his shows in advance, and that was the case with last night's program. I just talked to the folks up at the Bowery Ballroom in New York (where Bloc Party is playing the next two nights) and they said the show was still a go. So that's obviously a good sign for Saturday's show here. I suppose he could always re-aggravate his voice, but I'd count on the show happening. And don't forget to get there in time for openers The Ponys, who will no doubt be a tough act to follow.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hey GOGs!! Now with the weather warming up can you guys recommend any good places to eat crabs? When does the season start? Thanks.

Alexa: Have a look at this list. The season for locals begins in May.

_______________________

Takoma Park, Md.: Help, please! My dad is coming into town Friday and we have a couple of hours to kill before dinner - what to do? (Keep in mind it'll be raining, so nothing outdoors.) I'm meeting him at his hotel in Woodley Park around 4 and we have dinner plans in Dupont at 8.

Any ideas what to do? My dad is pretty adventurous and easy-going, so something quirky or exotic (but still appropriate for a 60-something year old guy and his daughter) would be fine. Or even just something mildly entertaining?

Thanks, you guys are great!

Erin: Spend a dreary afternoon in a museum. Since you'll be eating in Dupont, check out the Modigliani exhibit at the Phillips Collection. He might also be interested in the Smithsonian's new National Museum of the American Indian.

_______________________

Logan Circle, Washington, D.C.: Help! Can you recommend a furniture store where I can find a trendy office desk and dining room table. I am moving into a NEW condo in Logan and need trendy space saving furniture! Thanks sooo much for your help.

Janet: Apartment Zero is one of the more modern places around, along with Design Within Reach.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Have any of you gone out for drinks/food over by the Hill on Barracks Row? If so, how is it? Can you recommend any places?

Fritz: I just did a story about a trio of bars on Barracks Row. The miniburgers at the Ugly Mug are great, and I like the rooftop patio at Marty's. Finn Mac Cool's is a great place if you like Irish spots -- especially if you're looking for Beamish stout. For live music, it's about Ellington's on Eighth.

Belga Cafe is the fine-dining option, and while the food is good, I agree with Tom Sietsema that the service can be awful.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I've got a good friend living in Baltimore and we love to get together, but it's tough for either of us to make the long drive after work, then back home later after dinner. Do you know of any good restaurants off 95 between Washington and Baltimore where we could meet?

Alexa: I've always been intrigued by Cracker Barrel. But can anyone help us out?

_______________________

Indebleu:
Hey Gurus-

What's the deal with Indebleu's 'guest only' policy? I know you mentioned it last week, but have you heard how strict they're being with it?

Thanks!

Fritz: If you arrive before 9? Not very.

_______________________

Silver Spring, Md.: I have been anxiously awaiting the opening of the Lacoste store on M Street so that I could buy the lace-up Mary Janes featured on the Lacoste.com. Unfortunately, I just spoke to a sales rep at the store and they don't carry them! Does anyone know of a store in the area where I can find them? Any help would be much appreciated!

Janet: Are they a Lacoste product? If so, couldn't the sales rep at the store tell you where you could find them???

_______________________

Clarendon, Va.: Last week you mentioned the Clarendon Ballroom roof deck on Wednesdays...

I went on a number of Wednesday evenings last year, but don't remember what the specials were. Please refresh my memory, it was $1 drafts until 8 p.m., correct?

Fritz: Yep. See you next Wednesday?

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: To the Star Wars person, the author of the "Revenge of the Sith" novel will be at the Courthouse Olsson's tonight at 7.

Jen: Good call. Thanks for reminding us about this. (The author's name, by the way, is Matthew Stover). If you want the movie to be a total surprise, though, you might not want to read the book yet.

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: The Gurus Rock. I'm getting addicted to this blog.

Joe: I'm sure there's a rehab center that can take care of that.

_______________________

Cube, Vienna, Va.: Has anyone been to Montreal? Have you got a shopping (girl) or bar (beer) suggestion. Thanks.

Maura: To start, I can give you some general Montreal info, Tom's postcard on restaurants and tips on baccarat. Any readers with recent tips on shopping and bars?

_______________________

Sour City, Washington, D.C.: How many times do I have to ask a question before you answer it?

Joe: Once.

_______________________

Norfolk, Va.: What's the deal with the Springsteen concert? I didn't see it listed on Ticketmaster.com for VA...???

Joe: Yeah, I just looked and I don't know why it's not showing up on Ticketmaster.com. I assume they'll put it up later today. The tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10 a.m. for Springsteen's May 14 show at the Patriot Center. There's a two-ticket limit. Also, the tickets won't be available at actual Ticketmaster outlets, so don't go to your favorite place and camp out.

_______________________

Washington, D.C. 20002: Hey GOGs,
Any ideas of how to enjoy the spring weather and blossoms while avoiding the tourists? I have no urge to fight the crowds for sidewalk space or parking.

Erin: This is definitely the time for tourist influx! For a beautiful sanctuary, go to Georgetown's Dumbarton Oaks. Also, you can head down to some of the restaurants, such as Tony and Joe's or Sequoia on the waterfront in Georgetown for drinks and patio dining.
Now that the weather is nice, go cheer on the Nationals at RFK!

Head to the Tidal Basin at night for thinner crowds and a different look at the blossoms.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I've been looking for a great hamburger in DC. Can you recommend one? The Daily Grill has a decent one, but otherwise, I've been pretty dissatisfied. A bonus would be a place that serves fresh fries (not frozen), but I don't want to be greedy -- I'll be happy with an excellent burger.

Alexa: The best one I know is at the Evening Star. Or what about Cafe Deluxe? Others say Sign of the Whale; Fritz is sounding hungry for the knob of blue cheese tucked into Childe Harold's patty.

Rhome: When my beastly side triggers the red-meat craving, it's all about Five Guys. EVERYTHING's fresh. And big.

_______________________

Alexandria, Va.: Hey Gurus,
I am looking for a cool, exotic restaurant to try in D.C., Md. or Va. A hidden treasure that has yet to be found.

Alexa: And are you finding one?

_______________________

Reston, Va.: I have friends from Georgia visiting this weekend for the Cherry Blossoms. We're interested in going to the festival this Saturday which starts at 10 a.m. but I hear we need to get there by 8 a.m. or earlier. Is this true? Also, will there be food venues or do we need to scope out restaurants nearby (if so, can you recommend some; being from Georgia, they prefer down-home cooking)? Thanks!

Anne: The parade starts at 10, the street festival a bit later, and there's no reason to be at either by 8 a.m. The festival is an all-afternoon affair, and yes, there will be food sold there for $1-$6 tastes. Downtown, Georgia Brown's is known for its southern food.

Quintessential D.C. bar?: Dear GOGs-
I have some friends coming in from Hawaii later this month, and we want to take them to the best, most quintessential D.C. bar for a Happy Hour on a Friday afternoon.
We would prefer something that is in the city (they will be doing the touristy thing at the Smithsonians and monuments all day), maybe with a great view, outdoor seating and great happy hour specials.
Any place in particular come to mind?
Thanks!

Fritz: The "best, most quintessential D.C. bars" don't have much in the way of outdoor seating, views or happy hours -- I'm thinking here of places like Old Ebbitt Grill, Off the Record in the Hay-Adams, the Town and Country Bar at the Mayflower, the Round Robin Bar at the Willard. (Tourists and natives probably have very different ideas about the usage of "quintessential" here.)

How about a trip down the Georgetown Waterfront? Get a table outside at Sequoia or Tony and Joe's and you'll have a riverside view of the Kennedy Center and young Washingtonians "relaxing."

_______________________

Downtown Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus,
Good comedy is worth a lot to me and my friends who are coming to town this weekend. What do you know about the Upright Citizens Brigade at the Comedy Spot? Seen them before? Worth $15?
Muchas gracias!

Jen: I saw the Upright Citizens Brigade a few months ago in New York City, and definitely enjoyed it. Don't know much about the touring group, but I assume they'll do the same type of creative, absurdist improv that I saw. For $15, I'd say it's definitely worth it.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I am new to the metro area and would like to visit gallery openings or exhibitions or other art functions. I think it would also be a good way to meet people, since I am not single.
Thanks.

Maura: Well, first off, welcome to D.C. If you're game to try some gallery openings, look into the monthly late nights at area galleries. Many Dupont Circle galleries stay open late on the first Friday of the month, Seventh Street galleries on the third thursday of the month and the Georgetown galleries in Canal Square, the third Friday of the month. By all means don't hesitate to just stop into some galleries whose work you like and get yourself on their mailing list. You'll be personally invited to their next opening.

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: My job is VERY boring and I am able to escape during the day for shopping, sightseeing, etc. Where's the best bar to go to commune w/ fellow "long-lunchers"?

Joe: I've seen people (including some of my colleagues) spend a good couple of hours at Summers, the bar/restaurant a block from the Courthouse metro. They claim to go just to watch the soccer games, but I'm sure they have a pint or two as well.

_______________________

Enough with the 40-somethings: Any ideas on where two mid-20s non-Mercedes-driving girls can go out to be around other mid-20-somethings in Tysons Corner during the week? Our jobs are exhausting (and our next-youngest co-workers are 45) so D.C. during the week just don't happen. Thoughts?

Fritz: I can't think of many, because I loathe that "On the Border" scene, and eCiti always seems older than mid-20s to me.

Anyone have any suggestions in Tysons Corner?

_______________________

Restaurant with D.C. view: The steakhouse at the top of the Key Bridge Marriot (JW's, I think?), Ruth's Chris in Crystal City...those are the two that spring to mind...

Alexa: Oh. Right. Thank you.

_______________________

RE: Dad in Town: My dad was in town last weekend and I took him to the Price of Freedom exhibit at the American History Museum It has info on all wars from Revolutionary to present. My dad enjoyed every bit of it, especially the WWII and Vietnam sections.

Maura: Good to know. Here's more information on The Price of Freedom.

_______________________

For the person looking for a view: How about dinner (though the food is not amazing) or drinks (which would be much better) on the roof of the Hotel Washington? Great views of the White House and other D.C. things! Just an idea!

Thanks

Alexa: And a scrum, to boot. But yes.

_______________________

Sour City to Joe:: Not likely pal!;

Joe: Well, what was your question SC? I'm sure we'll get to it before the hour is out.

_______________________

20011: Skynear in Adams Morgan has funky furniture that fits small spaces well. Maybe they have the right thing for the Logan Circle condo.

Janet: Skynear is certainly a good spot to look!

_______________________

Lacoste store again: The sales rep gave me a number to call for their distributor but it forwarded me to a phone sex line!

Janet: Just looked at the Neiman Marcus Web site and saw lace-up Mary Janes, so forget about that the phone sex line for now.

_______________________

Mt. Pleasant, Washington, D.C. : Fabulous going out gurus, I need your help. My girlfriend and I are looking for lesbian-friendly bars and dance clubs in D.C. with a racially mixed crowd. Straight clubs are fine but we're an interracial couple, early-30s, and would like to find some comfy, chill bars and places to dance that are more diverse than what we've experienced so far in D.C.. Any ideas, and perhaps insight into the race/ethnicity divide in D.C.'s scene? Thanks so much!

Fritz: The state of lesbian clubs is pretty sad, especially with Hung Jury closed. Other than the weekly parties at Chaos and the Liquid Ladies Saturdays at Apex, there's not a lot out there. I've heard about a new Saturday party at Aqua; you may want to check out the Women in the Life site for more ideas.

_______________________

Re: On the Border scene: True that...and full of CIA interns..talk about security violation.

I'm curious about the Mr. Smith's outpost in the Pike 7 shopping center, since it was running a Saturday night d n'b night for a while evidently...anyone, anyone?

Fritz: It's a nice little spot, lots of dark wood and brass, with a crowd that I've found to be 30s-40s with a smattering of twentysomethings -- unless you hit one of their theme parties. Not a bad spot for a beer, and probably worth checking out.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I have never been to Iota in Arlington before and am looking forward to checking out Joseph Arthur there tonight (9pm). Do you have any recommendations on how early one should try to get there in order to get a table? I am sure that it varies, but have no sense of how much time I should leave?!!

Thanks!

Joe: Here's the thing about Iota. It's almost impossible to get a seat. There are about 18 bar stools and one booth in the whole room. So, chances are you'll be standing. The club is very small and it really depends on whose playing as to whether the show will sell out or not. For bigger names, it's best to arrive by 8:30 to ensure that you'll get in. Other nights you can show up any time and still make the cut. Have fun. Despite (or maybe because of) the lack of seating, it's easily one of the best live music venues in the area. And the staff there is great.

_______________________

Silver Spring, Md.: Happy Spring, O all knowing GOGs!

I need Cherry Blossom 411!

I've lived in this area for years and never made it to the Cherry Blossom Parade. This year, motivated by a hometown friend who just moved down, I am determined to go!

Any insider tips for where best to stand, what time to arrive, things to look out for, etc?

You guys are the best! Thanks for making me look like I have some clue as to what's going on. Cheers!

Anne: Here's all the info on the Cherry Blossom parade. It runs along Constitution Avenue, from Seventh Street (in front of the National Archives) to the far end of the Washington Monument. There's wide sidewalks all the way. The weather will be the biggest factor on how early to stake out a spot.

_______________________

Falls Church, Va.: A Janet question:

Any suggestions on where to get some framing done, without it costing a fortune?

Janet: Good question. I think there were some chatters out there a couple of weeks ago who had some suggestions. Anyone want to chime in?

_______________________

Fairfax, Va.: Here's hoping you have some insights: I have a bridal shower this weekend and, due to unforeseen circumstances, am planning a dinner/outing for three relatively calm moms, six slighty rowdy ladies, and two attendants under the age of 12. I need a fun, somewhat hip local (Ffx, Clifton, etc.) restaurant where we can be just rowdy enough to have fun, not too rowdy and with food appealing to a wide audience. Please help a frantic bride-to-be! Thanks!!

Maura: Artie's might fit the bill for you or it's sister restaurant Coastal Flats.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Yay! It's Thursday, so it's GOGs day (and one of my faves!) So my b/f's birthday is coming up, and was thinking about doing dinner at the restaurant with the belly dancing -- Marrakesh? His birthday falls midweek, so would it be better to wait til the weekend? (We would likely be joined by his bro & sis in law.) Also, is the meal prix-fixe? (We also adore Indian food, so ideas along those lines would be welcome, too.) Thanks!

Erin: We like Taste of Morocco in Courthouse, which features weekend belly-dancing and excellent bastilla. If you're also looking at Indian restaurants, try the small dishes and great cocktails at Indique on Connecticut or the new and swanky Indebleu on a weeknight.

_______________________

Vintage Clothes: Dear Gurus,

I know you have often suggested where to find vintage clothes. But if I was looking to sell an old tux, where would I stand to profit best?

Thanks.

Janet: Meeps Fashionette used to carry a lot of old tuxedo jackets. That could be a place to try.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: For the shopper looking for cool clothes, I like Pink November on 12th & U. It's like an LA boutique.

Janet: Thanks, D.C.,
That sounds worth a shopping trip.

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: Re: Montreal

There's a great Web site for Montreal tourism...very different from traditional travel sites: www.madeinmtl.com

Maura: Great advice from Arlington: www.madeinmtl.com.

_______________________

Glover Park, NW, Washington, D.C.: Happy Thursday GOGs! I'm looking to track down some of D.C.'s most stylish young professional women. I'm headed out this Saturday night and usually take to Chole or 1223 - but get caught up in the mind-numbing crowds. Any semi-crowded (not dead though!) places to check out around that way. P.S. I've been to Blue Gin and dig it!

Fritz: I'd take Chloe over 1223 almost every time.

"Semi-crowded" is such a tough call, because standards can really vary. I'd send you to Modern or Tapatinis, maybe Gazuza if the weather's nice, or one of Helix or Rouge. Helix tends to be busier later.

_______________________

Silver Spring, Md.: Hi Gurus! What can you tell me about Afri Kafe? It's a networking group like Young Professionals, but I don't know much about it. I'm looking for an organization where I can meet 20s-30s professional people like myself. Thanks!

Anne: I don't know much about it either, but I think my friend Judy is a member. Sounds like a good place to meet people. Want to try it out and let us know what you find? Let's ask the group.

Re: Lacoste shoe: Try davidz.com

Janet: Here's another source for the person looking for Lacoste shoes.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I saw an ad in today's Express for the Junior League's "Tossed and Found" sale. Does anyone have any experience with this event? Is it good stuff, or all Talbots sweater sets? Prices? Does the Junior League have a different concept of rummage sale prices?

Erin: I wrote my blog on it this week! While it does take a little digging, there are some hidden treasures. Get there early and prepared to search through the masses of things. There are usually some neat pieces of furniture and trinkets.

_______________________

For the Tyson's Corner girls: It's no hot scene, but I used to log a lot of time at Mr. Smiths in the Pike 7 Plaza strip mall. They have darts and friendly bartenders and it's not too hard to become a regular.

Fritz: There you go.

_______________________

Sour City Again: All right, here's my question -

What's the average annual rainfall in the Amazon Basin?

Joe: That's a trick question. Everyone knows it doesn't rain in the Amazon Basin.

_______________________

Crystal City, Va.: Are there any places nearby that I can get my haircut? I need a good place to get a fade, or an even steven with a good edge up.

Janet: Anybody have any suggestions for this chatter iso a haircut?

_______________________

Arlington, VA: I was at the Clarendon Ballroom rooftop deck last night and they proclaimed happy hour was over at 7pm. Any word on if this is a permanent change from their old ending time of 8pm?

Fritz: I dunno. I talked to owner Pete Pflug while writing my blog/story on outdoor bars and he said 5 to 8 ... I'll give him a call and see what happens.

_______________________

Wow, you guys are great: GoGs, I commend your good spirits in the face of submitters with an overactive sense of entitlement when it comes to their questions...

Joe: Yeah, really.

_______________________

Burger time: The cafe at Palena has the best burger in D.C. (and hot dog for that matter). A little more upscale settings, but man is it worth it!;

Fritz: And only $10!

_______________________

Ashburn, Va.: hello there - Do you know of any Thai restaurants with an atmosphere similar to PF Chang's? I'm looking for a nice Thai place that's not the typical hole in the wall with a neon sign. I'd love to find one in Loudoun or Fairfax counties, but a D.C. suggestion would be great, too. Thanks for your help!

Alexa: Have you been to the Thyphoons? Any of the Sala Thais. Tara Thais? THAI Shirlington? I think you'd like these interiors.

_______________________

Washington, DC: MONTREAL!!! Go to Old Dub's! (I think it's actually called the dubliner or something like that). very cute- irish pub that has live music- great atmosphere, whenever I go up to Montreal I always go there. The bartenders are very nice too! Montreal has great shopping and clubs/bars, I believe it's St. Laurent and St. Catherine's Streets that are the two main ones to check out. Have fun! They've got some great strip clubs too if you're into that.

Maura: Now I want to go too! Thanks.

_______________________

NYC: I'm coming down to D.C. tonight (be there at 9:30 p.m.) ... where should I go for GOOD live music? I love jazz, blues, classic rock, reggae.
Thanks,
ADAM

Joe: Check out our music listings. The Nighthawks playing at Wolf Trap might be what you're looking for, but I don't think you'll be in town early enough and anyway, that's a half-hour drive from the city. You could try and catch Kenny Rankin at Blues Alley in G'town. He'll play a late show that begins around 10.

_______________________

Xandria, Va.: Good ol' Gurus,
I have been impressed with the quantity of rooftop decks in Baltimore and always thought they could be a great attraction (and liability)to a good watering hole. Can you give me the names of a few spots in DC that have ventured to offer their beverage-quaffing clients outdoor deck space with a view? Need not be upscale.

Fritz: The Reef is always my favorite -- 14 draft lines, great bartenders, good view and crowd. Other places I like: Madam's Organ, the sports-heavy TVs at Bricks (discussed above), and Five, the Dupont dance club that puts DJs and a Caribbean-themed bar on its spacious roof.

If you're in Va., I really like the Clarendon Ballroom happy hours Weds-Fri. Huge roof, lots of young people sipping discount drinks.

Stay away from Lauriol Plaza. It's just not worth it.

Washington, D.C.: I will be needing to consume adult beverages on Sunday afternoon. Do you have any ideas on where that might be? My wish list includes drink specials, a lively (or at least not dead) scene, and a Dupont/Cleveland Park venue. Thanks!

David: Well, it won't be dead at Lucky Bar on Sunday afternoon because there will be plenty of people there to watch the Real Madrid v. Barcelona match. But there will also be a cover to get in, and soccer might not be your thing. Otherwise, The Big Hunt, perhaps?

Downtown D.C.: For the poster who wasn't so impressed with Indebleu--I went there last Friday for happy hour with some friends from work. A couple of us were prepared to hate the place the minute we walked in the door but we ended up having a great time. The drinks were incredible (particularly the Bloody Mary) and the bartenders were very friendly. I'm not sure what was up with the couches in the side room but we had fun just hanging at the bar.

I also wanted to comment on the Chloe debate. I've been there twice and had a great experience both times. We went early (10:00ish) and got seats at the bar. The bartenders are very cool and they start playing fun music after about midnight. The only thing I can say to the doubters is just don't go and free up space for those who enjoy the place!

Fritz: True.

RE: Tyson's Corner: The Cafe Deluxe in Tyson's isn't a bad spot for a drink, especially with the nice weather and open deck.

Fritz: Thanks. Haven't been there in ages. Maybe I need to head back.

Alexandria, Va.: What happened to the "Got Plans with Kids" discussion? I was a loyal reader, but haven't seen anything new since March 2. Help! I have a feisty two-year old at home and I could use some new ideas for things to do this spring.

Maura: It's on hiatus for now, Alexandria. We're hoping to relaunch it at some point or bring you some other form of parent-focused interactivity.

That said, we welcome your kid questions in this forum as well.

Alexa: Oh gosh, I don't think I'll be coming up with anything you haven't thought of. A farm is nice in spring -- Frying Pan or Oxon Hill; a kite on the Mall is nice, train spotting with a bag of Five Guys burgers at King Street Amtrak Station; plane spotting at Gravelly Point (loud); a bounce on the pizza at the Zoo. . . How am I doing?

REAL Sour City: That "Amazon Basin rainfall" thing was NOT submitted by me. I'm the REAL Sour City, and are you gonna answer me or not?!;?

Is this how you treat your readers? Sheez!;!;

Joe: Well, what IS your question pal? We keep answering all of your complaints. What more do you want from us?

Falls Church, Va.: Up until a month ago, I had a unibrow. Up to that point, I was too proud of a man to get anything like that done. But I have finally realized that it's not so bad. However, the place I went to did a horrible job. It was uneven and I was left with wax all over my forehead. Having said all that, my question is where is there a hair shop that does waxing, in which someone who is still a little uncomfortable with the whole male waxing thing can go, that is in the Northern Virginia burbs, and is moderately priced? I'm willing to spend more than I did ($12), but not too much.

Janet: I always hear good things about Skin Beauty Lounge.

In DC and ready for a drink!: Whats the word on the Panache happy hour? Is it worth checking out? Foodwise? Crowd?

Fritz: It really varies. I like it when it's warm and they can open the front walls/doors to let the air circulate. The drink menu is short but solid, bartenders are good, but my favorite part is the house-made flavored vodka. Delicious, especially when bing cherries are in season.

As for the crowd -- they get a lot of ABC types in, but it's on the young side. (I think the "hidden" location on Desales Street makes it hard for the neighborhood office workers to wander by. Certainly not a scene, but it can be a cool place to relax.

Washington, D.C.: Do you guys know when The Deck at the Savoy in Glover Park will be opening up for the season?

Fritz: Nope. Didn't get a call back when I tried to get info on Tuesday, and I haven't heard any buzz about it this year. Try to snag a seat on Bourbon's patio or hit the back garden at Busara instead.

Old Town, Va.:
Recently moved to Old Town Alex and can't seem to find a good local bar where I can get a decent meal, chat with a friendly bartender, and not be bum rushed by hordes of tourists. Am I missing any off the beaten path?

Fritz: Upstairs at Cafe Salsa? Brews and brats at Founders? Vermillion?

_______________________

Alexandria, Va.: I've been through Smithsonian. I have a craving to see more and learn more. I need to visit the Spy Musuem. Anything else interesting in D.C. along those lines?

Maura: If you're thinking museums, outside the Smithsonian there's plenty to see. Have you been to the Holocaust Museum? Phillips? Corcoran? Kreeger? Koshland Science Museum? Dumbarton Oaks? the Folger? Frederick Douglass Historic Site? The Octagon, National Building Museum and Library of Congress are other must-sees. Another Smithsonian museum off the Mall -- the Anacostia Museum -- has three new shows worth a look.

Outta Town: Hey gurus ... I miss these chats, used to live in D.C. but now I'm just a tourist with my girlfriend for the Cherry Blossom Festival. We're planning on checking out the Drumming going on at the Kennedy Center from like 5-7, can you suggest some good, laid back restaurants and bars in that area we could check out afterwards? (Or before if there are any decent happy hours...) That and any ideas on fun stuff going on tomorrow night would be great.

Thanks!

Anne: Most restaurants near the Kennedy Center are on the pricey side. But I can't say enough good things about the Circle Bistro happy hour, especially if it's nice enough to sit outside. Make sure you get the bar menu, and you'll have sophisticated eats for a few bucks. Because the show's with Millennium Stage, it shouldn't matter if you eat first and come later. You could even stick around the Kennedy Center and check out the '40s fashions in the Terrace Gallery.

Graduation Reservations...: My family is coming to DC for my graduation from college in May, and I'm not sure where to make dinner reservations. The difficulty lies in the fact that I have young siblings (the youngest is 6) who are picky eaters. Any suggestions for a place I can take my family that is nice enough to celebrate a special occasion but also kid friendly in terms of menu and service?

Erin: First, congrats on your graduation. I had a similar predicament last year! How about Georgia Brown's for some good old friend chicken or the Daily Grill in Georgetown or near Dupont. If you are looking for a place where the kids can chill out, try Old Ebbit Grill. The food isn't the best, but it's historical and very Washington. For great Italian and some kid-friendly pasta choices in a nice setting, I like Teatro Goldoni on K St.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: For the woman moving to Chicago, Cafe Citron has an upstairs that overlooks the balcony. From past experience, if you have a large enough group (and you do), they will reserve the upstairs section. They have good drinks, good music, and a nice atmosphere.

Maura: More follow up on party rooms. Thanks.

Arlington: I've noticed a couple of you have had questions or concerns about the bar 51st ST Tavern. Well I can help you out. I love the place. The outside deck is open now and tonight the drink special is 3$ Yeungling. It can be slow at times but the bar usually fills up around 10:30. There are 2 levels, pool table, great music and different drink specials every night. They have a pretty good selection of beer too.

Fritz: "Questions or concerns?"
I gave it a pretty good review right here.

_______________________

Clarendon Ballroom on Wed: Just a heads up, last night the $1 beers were only until 7 and the bouncer we talked to said he thinks it's going to stay that way.

Fritz: Damn. That extra hour was always welcome. Thanks for the info.

Re: Lesbian Bars: How about Phase 1 on Capitol Hill?

Fritz: I didn't mention the venerable Phase because it's the biggest and oldest (and only full-time) lesbian bar in the city, and if people are familiar with the scene, I figured they'd know about it.

But for anyone that doesn't: Phase One.

Arlington, Va.: I saw something about the Six Points Music Festival on the Washington Post MP3 site. Is there a Web site where I can find the show start times and cover charges for the shows? Also, any suggestions as to what shows to check out? I'm not familiar with all the bands playing but am looking forward to checking out something new.

Thanks!

Joe: We sense a plug, but we'll bite anyway. Here's a link that should give you what you're looking for.

K Street, Downtown, Washington, D.C.: Hey GOGs! Love your chat! I've been a D.C. local for many years hanging out at some of D.C.'s best scenes. I've been impressed with the recent openings of Choe, Cloud, Indique, Blue Gin ... but feel like I've been to all of them too many times. Do you have any scoop on hip places that just opened or will be opening in the NEAR future that I can look forward too?

Fritz: I'm looking forward to checking out Oya, a hot new restaurant and lounge near 9th and H. My bank account certainly isn't.

_______________________

Framing: I've used Frame of Mine on the Hill near Belga Cafe. Bonus is that they let you DIY for the assembly which can save a few bucks and it's really easy.

Janet: For the person in search of an inexpensive framing option.

_______________________

Virginia: I'm looking for a really cute romantic restaurant to go to with my boyfriend, something that's not too pricy. I'm thinking white table cloths and dim lighting. Any ideas?

Alexa: Are you wanting to stay in Virginia. Bistrot Lafayette is a sweet little French place on King with, I notice, half-off bottle of wine on Mondays.

_______________________

Re. Earring backs: Try Beadazzled in Dupont or Tyson's - they have a great variety of all kinds of earring findings. Claire's has the little rubber stopper backs, but that's about it.

Janet: Good suggestion for another place to try for earring backs -- losing them is a pain.

Washington, D.C.: Got anything to do on a chill, lazy Sunday afternoon? Cherry Blossoms are out (crowds are waaaay too stressful) but outdoorsy and arty are in.

Anne: I'll let you in on a secret. Between the Freer, the Arts and Industries Building and Indy Ave. is a serene courtyard, the Enid A. Haupt Garden. It's the perfect place to sit on a bench and have an ice cream cone from a nearby vendor, and reflect. So quiet there, the tourists will miss you. And when you're done, have a look through the Freer. The exhibit Boating on a River sounds like it could fit perfectly with the peaceful mood.

Arlington, Va.: So, my rent went up 250 bucks and now I'm a broke chick that loves to go out and have a great time, but now can't. Your help comes in here - WHERE can you find out which club/bars are hiring? I have five years of bartending experience and would even cocktail at a place. If I work at a club/bar then I can still get the feel of being out but not spending money. I would be making money. That is how I got through college. So, it would be great for your tips on how I can make some tips. Cheesy I know - Thanks!

Fritz: I think the best place to find out is to ask the bartenders at any places you frequent if they've heard of anything. I know a number of bartenders who got their jobs because they were regulars at the establishment where they now work. I don't think you're going to find Asylum or Dr. Dremos placing ads in the classified section.

BTW, I know that Chloe is hiring at the moment, or were last weekend.

Alexandria, Va.: For the guy who wants waxing...

Try the Gentlemen's Quarters in Old Town. They cater to guys, and even have top-shelf booze to sip while you wait!

Janet: Now that's a good suggestion. Sounds as if it might be a good place to calm your nerves.

In need of a laugh at work: Can I just say that Joe's responses & quips are the highlight of these chats? Love all of you but Joe, you make me laugh!;

David: Sure, go ahead and say it. Perhaps we can get him to insert quips into different chats all over the site.

Indonesian Food: Alexandria also offers an unpretentious, small, pleasant Indonesian restaurant, relocated from Georgetown, called "Sarinah Satay House." It's on S. Van Dorn. Don't let the strip mall scare you.

Alexa: I'm afraid it scares me. I know that strip.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I'm heading to a pre-grand opening party at the new club Avenue tommorrow night. Have you heard anything about this place? What's the vibe - more like Five or the old VIP?

Fritz: I'm supposed to be going to that party, but, sadly, I'm booked all weekend. Can you come back next week and tell us what you think?

_______________________

Woodbridge, Va.: As a 38 year old, I find it hard to meet other singles in my age range.

Based on your column last week, I checked out Professionals in the City's Web site. One thing I discovered is that they have a separate group for people age 35 and up. Just email them and ask to be put on their separate 35-plus list.

I went to their 35-plus dance last weekend, and it was great! There were about 200 35-plus people there! They have another 35-plus mixer this Saturday night at Finemondo.

Keep up the good work! And don't forget about us "mature" folks!

Maura: We wouldn't forget you Woodbridge. Fritz and Rhome included that very Findemondo event in This Week in Nightlife.

_______________________

Annandale, VA: For views of the city, please don't forget the roof terrace of the Washington Hotel. I know they serve drinks and appetizers on the terrace but I don't know about dinner.

Fritz: Right, but it's not open for several more weeks. Doesn't help anyone who's going out this weekend...

Washington D.C.: Hey Gurus,

Ya'll used to sing the praises of Cafe Atlantico and I'm curious if that's still the case. I'm thinking about taking my BF there for dinner this weekend. Other option is Indique. What would you recommend?

Also, is Charlie Palmer pretty good about having non-meat options on the menu? Thinking about taking my dad there for his birthday because he's a steak guy, but I'm a vegetarian. And how far in advance would I need reservations?

Thanks!

Erin: Since the start of Minibar, Cafe Atlantico has been a little loud, so I would lean towards Indique. As for reservations at Charlie Palmer, if depends on which day you're looking to book. For a weeknight, you should be fin a week in advance.

Herndon, Va.: Help! My niece just sent me Flat Stanley (if you've never met Flat Stanley, he's a paper doll second graders use to learn about geography. They mail you the paper doll, you take him on an adventure, and send him back to the classroom with pictures). Apparently, he's been to D.C. before and met some bigwigs. I don't have those kind of connections, but now I have a reputation to live up to (plus, the Flat Stanley my nephew sent me in 2002 went to the Winter Olympics). Apart from the Cherry Blossom Festival and the typical touristy stuff (monuments, etc.), do you have any ideas where I can take him that a second grader would find really cool? I haven't lived here long, so I would appreciate some insider help.

Anne: Monuments are a great place to start -- I can see Flat Stanley posed up close with FDR, for example. I'm just guessing on your second grader's interests -- here goes... Mickey either in the Cherry Blossom parade or in front of the Reagan Building. Or how about at the zoo with the pandas, the new cheetah cubs or some farm animals in the background.

The Going Out Gurus: We're out of time, unfortunately. Thanks for all of your questions. Sorry we couldn't answer them all, but that's the way the "Got Plans?" ball bounces. On another note, I completely forgot to introduce our newest guru, Erin, who you can read all about in our blog bios. Be sure to give her a warm hello (Hello, Erin!). And join us next week when there's sure to be more leisure time-planning excitement.
