Varying Goals For Teachers

States have set many standards for teaching first-graders, and often the goals for one state differ from those of its neighbors. Here is a sample of requirements for social studies learning in Virginia, the District and Maryland.

Virginia

1. The student will develop map skills by:

a. Recognizing basic map symbols, including references to land, water, cities and roads.

b. Using cardinal directions on maps.

c. Identifying the physical shapes of the United States and Virginia on maps and globes.

d. Locating Washington and Richmond on a map.

2. The student will construct a simple map of a familiar area, using basic map symbols in the map legend.

3. The student will describe how location, climate and physical surroundings affect the way people live, including their food, clothing, shelter, transportation and recreation.

4. The student will recognize the symbols and traditional practices that honor and foster patriotism in the United States by:

a. Identifying the American flag, bald eagle, Washington Monument and Statue of Liberty.

b. Demonstrating respect for the American flag by learning the Pledge of Allegiance.

The District

The student:

1. Constructs timelines to show sequence and change.

2. Uses simple time and chronological references in context (year, month, seasonal timelines, past and future).

3. Compares everyday life in different places and times.

4. Recognizes that people, places and things change over time.

5. Explains reasons for honoring leaders from the past.

6. Identifies people (including Native Americans and leaders of other cultures) and events associated with major holidays.

Maryland

1. Students will examine significant ideas, beliefs and themes; organize patterns and events; and analyze how individuals and societies have changed over time in Maryland and the United States.

2. Students will use historical thinking skills to understand how individuals and events have changed society over time.
