With several young defensive linemen pushing for playing time, the Minnesota Vikings released veteran end Chuck Wiley yesterday.

Wiley, a seventh-year veteran from LSU, played in 28 games over the last two-plus seasons with the Vikings. He started the first two games this season while left end Kenny Mixon served a substance-abuse suspension.

The 29-year-old had nine tackles (one solo) in five games this season. He also has played for Carolina and Atlanta.

Wiley's release opened a roster spot for running back OnterrioSmith, who will return from his four-game suspension Monday night against Indianapolis.

The Vikings also signed wide receiver Ben Nelson from the practice squad and released wide receiver Ryan Hoag. . . .

Defensive lineman Greg Scott was waived by the Cincinnati Bengals, who are trying to upgrade the NFL's worst run-stopping defense.

Scott was on the Bengals' practice squad for the first six games. He was promoted to the 53-man roster but didn't play in a 27-20 loss at Tennessee on Sunday.
