The George Washington women's basketball team moved into a tie for second place in the Atlantic 10 West division with a 63-47 victory against Richmond yesterday at Robins Center. It was the Colonials ninth straight win against the Spiders and gave GW a sweep in the season series.
GW (16-7, 9-3) and Richmond (18-5, 9-3) are one game behind Xavier, which improved to 10-2 in league play with a win against Massachusetts.
Senior Anna Montañana led GW with 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting, connecting on all four of her free throw attempts, and also chipped in eight rebounds and seven assists.
Senior Jessica Simmonds and sophomore Kenan Cole finished in double-figures for the Colonials with 14 points and 11 points, respectively. Simmonds pulled down eight rebounds, while Cole grabbed six.
GW never trailed and scored the game's first nine points. Consecutive three-pointers by Montañana and freshman Kimberly Beck put the Colonials ahead, 23-10, with 7 minutes 32 seconds left in the first half. A layup by Richmond's Kate Flavin cut GW's lead to eight, but the Colonials reeled off a 10-2 run to take a 33-17 advantage with 2:11 left before intermission and went into halftime with a 33-19 advantage.
VIRGINIA 61, VIRGINIA TECH 58: Cavaliers freshman Takisha Granberry nailed two free throws with seven seconds on the clock to seal the win over the Hokies in Blacksburg, Va.
Virginia (17-8, 6-5 ACC) won at Cassell Coliseum for the first time since Feb. 6, 1997, when the Cavaliers won by 49 points, 90-41.
The Cavaliers led by seven at intermission, but in the second half Virginia Tech (14-9, 3-7) went on a 13-0 run to go ahead, 35-31.
The teams played within a two-point margin until Virginia went ahead 55-52 on a jumper by Siedah Williams with 4:33 to go. Williams added another jumper, but Tech came back within one on a three-pointer by Carrie Mason with 43 seconds left.
LaTonya Blue gave Virginia a three-point advantage with 17 seconds to go. Tech converted two free throws with eight seconds left to come within 59-58, but then Granberry stepped up and nailed both shots in the one-and-one situation to seal the Cavaliers' win.
OLD DOMINION 66, GEORGE MASON 49: In Fairfax, Shareese Grant had a game-high 17 points to lead the Lady Monarchs past the Patriots.
Old Dominion (14-7, 10-2 CAA) kept its flawless record intact over George Mason (9-13, 5-8), putting the all-time record at 36-0.
AMERICAN 73, COLGATE 59: The senior guard tandem of Joanna Barnes and Angel Jordan combined for 34 points to lift the Eagles over the visiting Raiders.
Jordan led all scorers with 21 points while Barnes had 13 for American (10-14, 5-6 Patriot League). Allison Lipinski had 17 points for Colgate (9-15, 5-6).
BUCKNELL 65, NAVY 58: In Annapolis, Lindsey Hollobaugh had 16 points to lead the Bison past the Midshipmen.
Navy (8-16, 4-7 Patriot League) shot only 36 percent from the field. Brooke Tomovich added 14 points for Bucknell (9-15, 3-8).
