Most Distinguishing Trait: Those familiar with Falls Road but who have not played there recently are in for a pleasant surprise, with the course having undergone an almost complete overhaul over the past year. Most notably, the front and back nines were switched, meaning what used to be a relatively tame test coming home has become more challenging. Also, it's clear the grounds crew has made great leaps in course conditioning; the fairways and greens are in their best shape in many years. The other significant upgrades are to the clubhouse, which has a new restaurant and bar overlooking the 18th fairway, and to the driving range.
Toughest Hole: Frustration can settle in rather quickly after playing No. 2. It's 505 yards from the back tees, not particularly long for a par 5, but the sloping fairways sometimes result in a treacherous second shot. The approach to the green leaves little room for error, with bunkers guarding either side.
Best Chance for Birdie: No. 17 gives the high handicapper the most reasonable shot at scoring, other than the par 3s. A 361-yard par 4 from the back, the 17th features an expansive fairway that doglegs to the left. Big hitters will have a pitching wedge at most for the approach; others are left with perhaps a 9- or 8-iron. The green can be slow at times, allowing players to shoot at the pin.
Practice Facilities: The remolded area boasts more than 20 berths and a large putting green. Also, unlike many courses, the practice area is not a long walk to the first tee, so go ahead and hit that second bucket of balls.
Shoe Policy: Nonmetal spikes only.
Rates: $27 weekdays, $33 weekends.
Directions: From the Beltway, exit onto River Road toward Potomac. Follow River Road to Falls Road and turn right. Stay on Falls Road for approximately one mile. Course is on the left just past the Bullis School.

At Montgomery County's Falls Road course, No. 14 is a straightforward hole, but if your shot strays to either side of green, you can be hip deep in a trap.
