The D.C. Board of Education and the D.C. Public Charter School Board have released charter schools' results on standardized tests given last school year as part of a national testing program under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The law requires that at least 41.92 percent of each elementary school's students be proficient in reading and 48.67 proficient in math. Secondary schools' goals were 28.08 percent in reading and 33.17 in math. Students needed to score at the 40th percentile or higher nationally to meet the proficiency standard. The standards for charter schools are the same as those for traditional public schools.
Schools marked with an asterisk failed to make "adequate yearly progress" over the previous year's results. Two asterisks mark schools that are not covered by the No Child Left Behind Act because they do not have the required minimum of 40 children enrolled. Under No Child Left Behind, various demographic groups -- such as African Americans, disabled children and students not fluent in English -- must meet test score targets in order for the school as a whole to make adequate progress.
