Airport Update
Sunday, July 4, 2004; Page P02
Passengers at Dulles International this summer should allow extra time for extra-long security lines; according to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, the waits have been running up to an hour. The cause: increased summer travel, the debut of Independence Air and airline fare wars. Lines should speed up once 130 newly hired security screeners arrive by July 11 . . . If you're traveling through the Warwick (R.I.),Rochester (N.Y.), San Diego, Tampa or Gulfport-Biloxi (Miss.) airports this summer, you may be asked to step into a "trace portal" while air (said to be no stronger than a hair dryer) is blown at you, then analyzed for traces of explosives. It's part of a Transportation Security Administration pilot program . . . London Gatwick's new 646-foot-long footbridge is the world's longest passenger bridge to cross an airfield. It's part of a construction project that, once completed next spring, will make for fewer shuttle rides between the terminal and planes for passengers.
