The major U.S. stock markets took a downward turn last week as investors continued to fret over rising inflation and the possibility of higher interest rates.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.4 percent to finish the week at 10,404.30. The Nasdaq composite index lost 0.3 percent to close at 1,984.81.

The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index, however, edged up 0.1 percent to 1,172.92.

Locally, the Washington Post-Bloomberg regional index closed Friday at 258.36, down 1.05 for the week.
