SI International, a Reston company that provides information technology services to government agencies, said yesterday it earned $3 million (26 cents a share) in its fourth quarter ended Dec. 25, up from $2.3 million (27 cents) in the comparable period a year earlier. Revenue rose 58 percent, to $69.6 million from $44.2 million. For the year, SI earned $10.9 million ($1.14) on $262.3 million in revenue, compared with a profit of $7.4 million (87 cents) on $168.3 million in revenue the previous year.
BioVeris of Gaithersburg lost $12 million (45 cents a share) on $5.3 million in revenue for its third quarter ended Dec. 31, compared with a loss of $16 million (60 cents) on revenue of $3.8 million in the comparable period a year earlier. For the nine months ended Dec. 31, BioVeris lost $70.4 million ($2.64) on revenue of $21.4 million. In the corresponding period of 2003, the firm lost $39.8 million ($1.49) on revenue of $14.8 million. BioVeris recorded non-cash charges of $3.2 million for the recent quarter and $37.1 million for the nine months ended Dec. 31, both related to selling its interests in a joint venture with the chief executive's son.
Visual Networks of Rockville earned $673,000 (2 cents a share) on $14.2 million in revenue in its fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, compared with a loss of $1 million (3 cents) on $10.8 million in revenue in the corresponding quarter a year earlier. For the year, the company earned $15,000 (0 cents) on $52.6 million in revenue, compared with a loss of $4.3 million (13 cents) on $39.2 million in revenue a year earlier.
Versar, a Springfield professional services firm, earned $421,000 (5 cents a share) on $19 million in revenue in its second quarter ended Dec. 31, compared with a profit of $366,000 (5 cents) on $14.3 million in revenue in the year-ago quarter. For the six months ended Dec. 31, the company earned $828,000 (10 cents) on $38.2 million in revenue, up from a profit of $709,000 (9 cents) on $27.9 million in revenue in the comparable period the previous year.
Intersections, a Chantilly credit management company, earned $3.3 million (18 cents a share) on $35.9 million in revenue in its fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, up from $2.5 million (18 cents) on $36.5 million in revenue in the year-ago quarter. For the year, the company earned $11.9 million (70 cents) on $152.9 million in revenue, down from a profit of $19.4 million ($1.36 ) on $147.3 million in revenue in fiscal 2003.
Pressure BioSciences of Gaithersburg bought back 5.2 million shares of its common stock at $3.50 per share for a total purchase price of $16.1 million. As a result, the company said it no longer meets the $10 million stockholders' equity requirement for inclusion in the Nasdaq National Market and is planning on applying to transfer to the Nasdaq SmallCap Market.
Alion Science and Technology of McLean acquired ManTech Environmental Technology (METI) from ManTech International of Fairfax. Terms were not disclosed. METI is an environmental and life sciences research and development company headquartered in Research Triangle Park, N.C. The company will operate as part of Alion's Technology Solutions Group.
