MARYLAND

Slaying Sentence A Prince George's County judge has sentenced a Bowie man to two terms of life in prison without parole in the slaying of a veterinarian and his wife in their Bladensburg animal hospital nearly six years ago.

Circuit Court Judge Graydon S. McKee III on Friday sentenced Robert Angel Perez, 23. Perez was convicted in November of murdering Nirwan and Shashi Thapar, both 52, in September 1999.

Perez was first convicted in April 2001. The Maryland Court of Special Appeals threw out that conviction in February 2004. Perez's co-defendant, Thomas Jefferson Gordon III, is awaiting a new trial date after both his convictions were thrown out.

VIRGINIA

Woman Assaulted A woman was attacked at knifepoint by a man who had broken into her home in the Alexandria area early Sunday, and Fairfax County police canvassed the neighborhood last night, seeking clues in the case.

The incident was the second in 30 minutes in the neighborhood near Bren Mar Park Elementary School, off Edsall Road near Interstate 395. In the first incident, a 19-year-old woman told police that a man tried to open the window of her apartment in the 6300 block of Beryl Road about 3 a.m. Sunday. The woman threw a pillow at the window, and the man fled.

About 3:30 a.m., a 57-year-old woman was awakened by an attacker in her apartment in the 5600 block of Bismach Drive. Police said that the man tried to sexually assault her but that she resisted and he fled. Detectives were trying to learn last night whether the incidents were related.
