• There will be at least one new occupant of the White House soon: The president is giving first lady Laura Bush a puppy for her birthday. The Scottish terrier pup is related to Barney, the current first pooch, and will be named Miss Beazley after a dinosaur in the children's book "The Enormous Egg."
• Scientists in London have unearthed a small tin canister at the site of an ancient Roman temple. The canister, about 1,850 years old, contains a white cream thought to be cosmetics.
• France has put a hold on hunting in the western Pyrenees mountains to save a bear cub whose mother, the last female bear native to the region, was killed by hunters this week. Dog-walking also is banned for now in areas where the cub might be roaming.
