DeShawn Baker ran for 151 yards on 26 carries as South Carolina State beat Howard, 23-16, yesterday in Orangeburg, S.C.

The Bulldogs (7-2, 4-1) remained tied with Hampton for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference lead, but the Pirates hold the tiebreaker with a win over South Carolina State.

Coty Martin's one-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter gave the Bulldogs a 20-6 lead.

But Antoine Hartfield threw an 11-yard scoring pass to Ryen Wilson to cut the lead to 20-13, then Justin Brantley kicked the last of his three field goals early in the fourth quarter and the Bison (5-4, 2-3) trailed by four.

Michael Gaston ended the scoring with a 30-yard field goal with 2 minutes 18 seconds to go for the Bulldogs.

Antione Rutherford led the Bison with 74 yards on 17 carries.

The Bulldogs' defense held Howard's quarterbacks to just seven completions in 29 passes.

"I thought our defense played great," South Carolina State Coach Buddy Pough said. "They had several opportunities to give in and give up a score, but they continuously stopped them time after time."

GUILFORD 35, CATHOLIC 21: In Greensboro, N.C., Chris Gammon threw two touchdown passes, and T.J. Journigan ran for 109 yards as Guilford ended an 11-game skid.

Mike Geraghty completed 14 of 23 passes, with two interceptions, for 195 yards, and Pat Truxillo was 11 for 21 (one interception) for 126 yards for the Cardinals, who fell to 0-9 (0-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference). Guilford is 1-8, 1-4.
