In a soccer tournament overshadowed by the earthquake and deadly tsunami, Malaysia defeated Indonesia, 2-1, yesterday in a game in which the teams wore black armbands in tribute to those killed in both countries.
There was a moment of silence for the victims before the game, which was attended by a capacity crowd of more than 80,000 at Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia.
At least 55,000 have died in South Asia and the east coast of Africa following Sunday's earthquake off the Indonesian coast and subsequent sea surges. Approximately 27,000 have died in Indonesia and at least 65 in Malaysia.
Liew Kit Kong scored twice for Malaysia in the regional Tiger Cup semifinals. KurniawanDwi Yulianto had Indonesia's goal. The teams will play the second leg of the series Saturday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
