• More than 1 million people have passed by Pope John Paul II's body at the Vatican, despite having to wait in line for as long as 14 hours. The pope will be buried Friday. The cardinals announced yesterday that the meeting to select a new pontiff will begin April 18.

• Iraq has a new president. The Iraqi assembly picked Jalal Talabani for the ceremonial role. Talabani is the first Kurdish president of Iraq. Kurds are a minority of the population who live mostly in the north of the country.
