Women's Heart Health Numbers to Live By

Women anxious to improve their heart health profiles can do so by consulting the following measures, taken from the American Heart Association (AHA) Guidelines for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Women. Unless otherwise stated, figures listed in each category represent target levels.

LDL less than 100 mg/dl

HDL greater than 50 mg/dl

Triglycerides less than 150 mg/dl

Statins

The AHA recommends cholesterol-lowering medication (preferably a statin) plus "lifestyle therapy" (regular exercise and controlled diet) for:

• Women at high risk of heart attack (see below) who have an LDL of 100 mg/dl or higher

• Women at intermediate risk who have an LDL of 130 mg/dl or higher

• Women at low risk with an LDL of 190 mg/dl or higher (or 160 or higher if multiple risk factors are present)
