How to Help

A List of Organizations Accepting Donations to Provide Disaster Relief

Compiled From Staff and Wire Reports
Friday, February 4, 2005; 5:37 PM

Here are some of the local and national organizations accepting donations to help victims of the South Asian tsunami. Most groups recommend that people donate cash rather than supplies.

Some Web sites, such as the Network for Good, allow people access to listings of U.S.-based charitable organizations in a searchable database. Amazon.com also enables users to route donations to organizations from its homepage.

How to Give Charitably and Safely

• Give only to legitimate charities recognized by the appropriate governmental bodies in their countries.

• Ask questions of the charity, and check www.guidestar.org for information provided by certain charities to the IRS. Find out how the charity plans to use your money.

• Make sure the charity site uses encryption. The letters https://, rather than http://, should precede the page's URL, and/or an unbroken key or padlock symbol should be in the corner of the Web browser.

• Try to give directly to the charity. If the charity has no online giving opportunities, consider contributing to www.networkforgood.org, which provides all registered charities in the United States with the capability to receive online donations.

• Check for a privacy policy concerning the use of your name, e-mail address or other personal information. Don't disclose personal information unless you know who is collecting the information and how it will be used.

• Print a copy of the final confirmation page that appears on your computer screen when you have made your gift, and keep a copy of any e-mail confirming the gift for your records.

• Look for contact information, which reputable charities will provide.

• Request regular information from the charity on its Web site or in e-mail updates.
