Southern Maryland can be a little bewildering, especially for all the newcomers who have moved into the area, but also for some people who have lived here a long time. To help you navigate, we are back with another year of The Guide.
This special edition of Southern Maryland Extra, produced by a team of Washington Post editors, reporters, editorial aides, photographers and artists, provides a general guide to Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's counties.
We have included some special features. One is an article about what makes a good school, by Post education writer and columnist Jay Mathews. A piece by Post gardening expert Adrian Higgins tells which trees grow well in this area. Columnist John Kelly provides the lowdown on how certain bridges got their names, and food writer Nancy Lewis surveys some of the restaurants in Southern Maryland.
As large as The Post may seem to readers, there is never enough space to print everything. For example, religion is a big part of our community, but we did not have enough space to list every faith institution.
Some features that regularly appear in Southern Maryland Extra on Thursdays can be found today at www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/print/community/southernmaryland/index.html and will resume in their regular spots in next Thursday's edition. We hope you enjoy The Guide and find it helpful. We welcome your suggestions and will update The Guide on The Post's Web site washingtonpost.com/theguideas new information becomes available.
