Got Plans?

With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com
Thursday, April 1, 2004; 1:00 PM

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

Submit your questions and comments before or during the discussion.

Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions.

The Going Out Gurus: Good afternoon. It's April Fool's Day -- Is our advice something to take seriously today, or are we playing one extended Live Online prank? You make the call. In the meantime, most of the gang is here and ready to answer your numerous Cherry Blossom, Easter brunch and other going-out-style questions. Fire when ready.

Bethesda, Md.: A girl I dated 2 yrs ago asked me to go with her to the Black Cat tomorrow night to see Wash. Social Club play. I'm trying to come up with a restaurant idea for a pre-show meal but haven't been out to eat in the 14th street area. Any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: Well, are you trying to impress her - or just feed her??? You could try Saint Ex, just a block away. Or the Islander, on U near 13th. Polly's is still a reliable bet.

Washington, D.C.: Hey fun people!

I'm looking for a happy hour venue with good little bites and fun drinks. Does Cafe Atlantico have a happy hour?

The Going Out Gurus: They used to, Washington, but no longer. You might want to try Cafe Citron for the discounted mojitos and margartias, but I don't think there's much in the way of food specials. The Topaz Bar has cocktails and small plates discounted every day. In Old Town, Cafe Salsa has deeply discounted appetizers and cocktails until 7 p.m., plus a drink of the day.

_______________________

Bethesda, Md.: Are there nice trails in the Washington area where people can take their dogs for a nice hike? I'm hoping there's a nice wooded area where a friendly dog may be allowed to run and sniff and enjoy the great outdoors.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Bethesda, Here's a list of local Dog-friendly Parks. You can also check Metropets.org for local information of interest to dog and other pet owners. For parks, check their yellow pages at www.metropets.org/YellowPages/parks.php. Lynette

College Park, Md.: A group of about 10 of us are headed to the Dupont Circle area for dinner Saturday night, and would like to follow it up with some karaoke. Any suggestions for a decent karaoke place in that area?

The Going Out Gurus: It's gotta be Cafe Japone, which is the only karaoke venue in that area. When the warbling gets to be too much -- and it will -- head downstairs to the kitschy Sango Sho lounge for drinks and take in the undersea decor. One of the more interesting bars in the Dupont area, with great DJs, too.

This is also the chance for me to point out that Zanzibar on the Waterfront is starting a karaoke night next Thursday -- I'm expecting lots of classic R&B tunes. They're giving prizes for the best and worst singers, so we all have a chance of winning. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: I am dying to get ot some museums this weekend. I have not been to any shows in months and finally have a free weekend. What is not to be missed?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Washington. I am hoping to hit a few museum shows myself this weekend (maybe at the Building Museum). Anyway, if you haven't seen Douglas Gordon at the Hirshhorn or the Quilts of Gee's Bend at the Corcoran, be sure to check them out. Otherwise, new in town you'll find Baseball as America at Natural History and Art of the Ancient Maya on Sunday at the National Gallery. -- Maura

Help!: A question for the shopping guru -- I'm getting married in the D.C. area and the time has come to search for a dress. I'm on a reasonable budget, but need to find a boutique that's accessible by Metro or decent public transportation. I don't mind walking up to about .75 miles from a Metro station as long as it's in a safe neighborhood, and would prefer salons where I can find a nice dress for around $500 or less. Used is an option! Thanks very much!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, there,
Have you been to Gossypia?
It's in Old Town, Alexandria. Another option is ebay. I've heard a lot of people saying they've found gowns on the site. Give it a try.

Columbia, Md.: My boyfriend would like to play softball this summer but can't seem to find a team. He's new to the area, so other than driving around to the fields in hopes of stumbling across a team that might need another player, we have not been very successful in finding him a team. Any suggestions?

~Jess

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Jess, The Howard County Parks and Recreation department sponsors adult softball leagues. They have men's, women's and co-ed leagues, in case you'd like to play also. And maybe some of our other softball-playing chatters can throw in some suggestions. What teams are still looking for players? Inquiring athletes want to know! Lynette

This one is for Ms. Janet...: You helped me a few weeks ago with a rec for the Paul Bosserman salon. I am going to call them today to make an appointment, but who should I ask for? Does Paul do your hair or are there other stylists there? Thank you sooooo much for all your help!

The Going Out Gurus: Paul is the one to ask for, but he's going on vacation shortly, and is very booked up. I couldn't get an appointment until the second week in May!! Hope you can wait.

Arlington, Va.: Gurus,
Just got back from Prague, Czech Republic and fell in love with Staropramen beer! Any thoughts where I can get some either as a six pack or on tap somewhere in these parts? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: One of my favorite Czech beers, and I've seen it in six-packs but not on draft. Only time I've had it in Washington was at one of Michael Jackson's beer dinners a few years ago. Try Chevy Chase Wine and Spirits or Whole Foods to purchase, and I'm guessing it's at the Brickskeller and/or R.F.D.

Arlington, Va.: Hello all, love the chats!

My BF is looking to join up with some team sports around the mall. As I am not athletically inclined, this would be a solo endeavor. He's a great guy, just a little shy when it comes to new people - care to lay some info on us regarding how to join, how newbies are greeted and treated, whether he'd be comfortable showing up alone, etc.? Thanks in advance!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Arlington, a couple of suggestions. Spring soccer season is gearing up and he can contact the Capital Coed Soccer League which has teams that play near the Lincoln Memorial. They're actually having a team happy hour tonight at Modern in Georgetown from 7-10 p.m. if he wants to drop by and talk to people (Can you go along tonight for moral support?). Another option is the The Washington Area Frisbee Club which has teams playing Ultimate Frisbee all over town. There are pick-up games on the Mall by the Washington Monument and in Arlington by the Marine Corps Memorial . I've just walked up and said hello to several of their teams and have always received a very friendly response. They love to play and they're always looking for new members, so don't worry. Just walk up and say hi.

Alexandria, Va.: Hey Gurus - Are the museums currently staying open late on Thursdays?
Thanks!!

The Going Out Gurus: The Corcoran and Phillips are both staying open late on Thursdays. By summer some Smithsonian museums -- Hirshhorn, African Art, Freer and Sackler -- should stay open late for Artful Evenings. -- Maura

Washington, D.C.: Oh great GOGs, I KNOW you can help me. I have been growing out my eyebrows for a few months now and I can't take it anymore. I must get them groomed. But where to go? I need an artist. Someone who will know exactly what to do. Someone in the District or Metro accessible if outside. Money is no object. PLEASE help me!

The Going Out Gurus: I haven't personally tried Lance at bluemercury, but he gets rave reviews. Brow shaping starts at $25.

Falls Church, Va.: Dear Gurus,

I have two questions if you don't mind. I'm heading to the Black Cat on Friday for the Washington Social Club show. What's the best way to get down there? Metro? Also, what's the word on the cherry blossom festival on Saturday? Will it be crazy-packed? Are there a lot of interesting things to see/do?

Thanks. You rock.

The Going Out Gurus: There's a couple people with cherry blossom questions, so let's try to hit them all. The easiest thing to do is take our printable map with you. Metro can take you to the cherry blossoms, too. Saturday is the biggest day in terms of festival events -- there's both the parade and the Sakura Matsuri Street Festival -- so yes, I'd expect crowds at those events and at the Tidal Basin, especially since it might stop raining. The Park Service says the range of days for peak bloom ends April 7, but these days of rain (and some wind) may have moved some of the blossoms from trees to path. Other blossoms around the region bloom later, so consider those alternatives to avoid the mobs. And to the Black Cat question, yes Metro can take you there too. Get off at U Street (Green Line), 13th Street exit. -- Anne

Washington, D.C.: Happy hours for 35+ crowd in D.C.? Music in the city, same age group?

The Going Out Gurus: For happy hours, try McCormick and Schmick's and Palena. As for music in the city, it usually depends on the show as to what age group will show up.

Arlington, Va.: Two words: Easter brunch?? Something different from a hotel. Location: Anywhere in the D.C./Metro area (prefer NoVA to Md.). Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, we've a few Easter brunch questions here today, so perhaps I can help you all out in one fell swoop and save you some time. There are plenty of good ones to choose from. Here are some things that might interest: Ardeo has a good-value set three-course brunch and dinner for under $30 a head; 701 has the same 3-course deal for a similar price and has live jazz; The Roof Terrace at the Kennedy Center has their usual brunch with the Easter bunny. Called the Sunday Kitchen Brunch, this will be a buffet of kid-friendly fare for $33 per adult, $17 for children; fresh local produce is promised all day at 15 ria where a three-course menu costs $45 per person (children under 12 dine for the same price as their age); Coeur de Lion is giving each guest a basket of treats to take home ($40 or $20 for kids under 12). The good old Bombay Club has an Easter version of their champagne brunch for $25 with live piano. I'll post this now and add more as we go on, but in the meantime, do consult this list of available tables. -- Alexa

Washington, D.C.: What are some good Thursday night happy hour places in Adams Morgan?

The Going Out Gurus: Depends what you want. The Reef has five draft beers under $4, ranging from Yuengling to Otter Creek (which was scheduled to go away, I think). Gets crowded later, but it's fairly chill. Chief Ike's has some decent beer deals ($1 off everything) and a small, neighborhoody crowd. Millie & Al's has cheap beer and a college crowd. Toledo Lounge has beers and drinks for under $3, too. Asylum's one of my favorites, with beers and snacks (wings, pizza) under $3, and I love the loud rock soundtrack -- although it really depends who's bartending. Late night, it's Bedrock, with discounted pints from 9 to 12. -- Fritz

Arlington, Va.: Any gurus or readers know of places to get jewelery cleaned? I have discovered a few places for gold, but haven't found anywhere to take my sterling silver stuff, to get it looking shiny and new again!

Suggestions??

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, I do have a suggestion. Maura here just went to the container Store and bought a cloth for cleaning silver for $5. She said it worked beautifully.

Re: Brow Grooming: Semra at Christiane Salon in Georgetown town is AMAZING and offers a brow boot camp to get those over plucked/grown eyebrows into shape. Regular visits are $20-25. She's worth every penny.

The Going Out Gurus: For the person ISO a place to get brows groomed, here you go.

_______________________

Southington, Ct.: Love the chats! I realize this might be a question for next week, but I figured you'd be "in the know." I understand the festival will still be going on, but do you think the cherry blossoms might still be around for Easter weekend? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Many of the Tidal Basin cherry trees will have turned to green leaves by then. For trees still in bloom, visit alternate places, like the Arboretum. -- Anne

For the weddng dress seeker: I saw some great vintage wedding dresses for about $50 each at a funky shop in Takoma Park a few weeks ago ... I can't recall the name of the shop -- but you can't miss it, it's right on the main drag.

The Going Out Gurus: Possibly PollySue's?

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: FYI - A friend of mine went to Blue Mercury for her eyebrows, and it was a complete disaster. She looked like she had two squiggly black worms drawn on her face. She's back to doing them herself now.

The Going Out Gurus: Did she go to Lance in Georgetown?

_______________________

Wedding Dress: If the bride likes silk dupioni and is about a size 6, I've got one in Arlington she can try. No joke -- haven't got around to eBaying it yet! Is there a way to exchange info?

The Going Out Gurus: For the wedding dress seeker, are you a size 6?

_______________________

Woodbridge, Va.: A good place to get a birthday cake?

The Going Out Gurus: Birthday cakes we love: the strawberries and cream cake from Whole Foods that can be custom ordered at almost any size. The raspberry Daquoise from the Alexandria Pastry Shop. Cakelove does a good one, and should considering its name. And dare I say that I've had my share of pretty fabulous sheet cakes from the Costco bakery. How do those ideas sit with you? -- Alexa

_______________________

Wedding Dress Option: Try looking at bridesmaid dresses. Most come in white/ivory. Saks Jandel is nice, and I know there are two places in Georgetown on Wisconsin.

The Going Out Gurus: Good idea. Wedding dresses seem to me to be more streamlined these days and you could get away nicely with the right bridesmaid dress.

Re:Karaoke: Peyote in Adams Morgan and Apex in Dupont both have karaoke with more space to sing than Japone.

The Going Out Gurus: 1. Peyote is small, cramped (almost no seats) and gets started later than "after dinner."
2. Apex's karaoke with Gladys Kravitz is a blast, but it's on Fridays, and the question specifically asked for Saturday night. Also, it usually doesn't underway until after 11, and I was trying to help people get their sing on in the early evening. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus, hoping you can post this near the beginning of the chat so that the Guru-ites can help me out as well.

I'm looking to sell some clothes (I know, I could donate, but let's assume for the time being that I could use the cash). Any tips on good consignment shops? The stuff isn't super-fancy designer stuff, more like Banana Republic, Gap, J.Crew, etc. that's still fairly stylish but just isn't in the wardrobe cycle these days.

Thanks for your help!

The Going Out Gurus: I've had some luck selling things at Act II in Bethesda.

-- Janet

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: Hi. I'm thinking of taking my boyfriend to the fireworks next weekend. Can you recommend a good place to view them? Would the Mall work or should I go someplace closer to the Waterfront? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: The Waterfront will put you closer to the action. Get to H20 or Zanzibar early and you'll have a first-rate seat.

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: A group of my gal pals are getting together to catch up tomorrow night, in the Arlington/Falls Church area. We're open to almost any cuisine, but there are a few limits - a few can only stay long enough for drinks, but others don't drink at all, so we need a place with good cocktails and good eats. Because we want to chat, a place that's not too loud/packed/dark/smoky is ideal. Despite how stodgy that makes us sound, we're all pretty hip 20-30-somethings!

I'm thinking Cafe Asia, but am curious if there's something newer we should try?

The Going Out Gurus: I think you'll be great with Cafe Asia, or maybe the Carlyle Grand in Shirlington? -- Alexa

_______________________

Achilles Man (Washington, D.C.): Went to the Marx Cafe last Saturday and it sucked. The atmosphere was really poor. Maybe it was me, because I went with this whole revolution mentality thinking you could feel that Che/Bob Marley environment. They do not even make mojitos, which was the straw for me.

Is there any place that you can get that revolution feeling with music and atmosphere?

The Going Out Gurus: Sorry to hear that. I don't like the food and the bar can seem dead at times, but Marx is a decent place to grab a beer, check out the DJs and hang with friends. (Skip the revolution mentality at Marx. It all seems rather manufactured to me.)

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Bummed out by the rain. What movies are you recommending this weekend? What are some fun, creative places to take a date, indoors?

The Going Out Gurus: If you're into comic book or action movies, you'll probably enjoy "Hellboy." It was more entertaining than I expected, and Ron Perlman is quite funny in the lead role. Or if you want to prep yourself before seeing "Dogville," you could check out one of the Lars von Trier movies at the AFI. As far as an indoor date, have you considered bowling? -- Jen

Washington, D.C.: For the person who asked on 3/25 for a good tailor - in Old Town - Mr. Suh at Suh's Custom Tailors, 101 S. West Street, Alex. He's fantastic and reasonably priced.
Love your chats, Gurus!!

The Going Out Gurus: Need a good tailor? Here's a suggestion:

Washington, D.C. 20009: Hi
Are there any bars with outdoor (pref. rooftop) seating in Dupont, besides the Lucky Bar? I went searching last week and I came up empty-handed. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Rooftop? There are a good number. I wrote a piece about this last year, and will update it when the weather turns for good, but you've got to include the rooftop bar and dance floor at Five, the roof at Lauriol Plaza, the really cool and scene-ish (and off-street) patios at Gazuza and Eighteenth Street Lounge, and curbside spots at Fox and Hounds, Savino, Foodbar and the Front Page. (There are more, but this should give you a start.) -- Fritz

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I just saw the April theater listings and it seems very promising. What shows are you most looking forward to?

The Going Out Gurus: There are a lot of impressive premieres this month, I agree. I'm intrigued by the live version of "Monty Python's The Life of Brian," "Five by Tenn" and "Boy Gets Girl," which sounds like a potential heart-stopper. The Def Poetry Jam is no doubt worth a look, too. -- Jen

_______________________

Planetary Alignment: Something like six planets are aligned this week and apparently you can see some of them with the naked eye. I seem to remember the last time there was a similar celestial event, you mentioned a planetarium, I think it was affiliated with the University of Maryland, where the public could go look through a big telescope. Can you give us this info again?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Planetary, Staff at the University of Maryland Observatory tell me (Lynette) that because of the distance between planets, you can't see the alignment through a telescope. The best place to see the whole thing (assuming clear skies) is outdoors.
Sky Meadows State Park
in Delaplane, VA, for instance, participates in the "Dark Sky" program for astronomers (reducing lights that obscure stars) and might be your best bet for seeing all of the planets at the same time.
You can still go to the observatory this weekend if you'd like. The National Capital Astronomers are holding their monthly meeting Saturday night (April 3) at the observatory from 7:30-9:30 p.m. and the public is welcome. The observatory is also holding its bi-monthly open house Monday (April 5) at 8 p.m. Both events are free and take place regardless of the weather.

Culture?: I feel as if I've spent the majority of my youth on a barstool, and now I want to introduce some culture to my life. I have all of my Saturday and Satur-night free?.any (inexpensive) cultural suggestions?

You guys are the best!;

The Going Out Gurus: There are plenty of free opportunities to pick up a little culture: During the day, try a jazz concert at the Museum of American History, the Sakura Matsuri street festival, a Japanese Anime film marathon or any of these exhibits. You can try the Millennium stage for free concerts any night of the week or snag cheap theater tickets through TICKETplace. There's plenty to do on the cheap, I typed in "Free" in the searchbox and found all of this. -- Maura

Washington, D.C.: Hi, GOGs
Do you know the name of the DJ that spun the roots-reggae on the first floor of VIP Club -R.I.P.-. Where and when is the DJ spinning now?

Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Don't know him by name, but I'm fairly certain he's now spinning in the reggae room at H2O on Saturday nights. The reggae was on point last Saturday, and almost as good as the burgers and 'dogs being grilled outside. -- Fritz

Bethesda, Md.: Saturday before Easter dinner with the mom, sister and husband. Mom likes pretty much anything as long as its not too weird, sister from Manhattan and is all about atmosphere and trying new things, my husband and I ... we just want to find a fun place with excellent food that they'll chat about the next day ... maybe in Georgetown or Dupont if that narrows it. I've looked into spots from Bistro Francais to Mie N Yu. I've also gotten a suggestion for Filomena's from someone at the office. Any others? I'm getting confused by all the reader reviews online, and the GOGs have always steered me in the right direction. We'd like to be able to find a lively spot to eat leisurely and talk, be surrounded by great atmosphere, then walk around a bit. Also can't go above a restaurant with $$, so the 1789s and Citronelles are out. Thanks!!

The Going Out Gurus: Bethesda, I'd bag the Mie n Yu idea in favor of somewhere like Zaytinya. You'll have plenty to chat about the next day and it's in a good spot for a wander-round afterwards. Does Indian count as "wierd." If not, Indique in Cleveland Park might suit, or Spices for inexpensive pan Asian. -- Alexa

Cake: Patisserie Poupon on Wisconsin Avenue in upper Georgetown makes beautiful, delicious cakes. Mmmmm, cake.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes. Poupon.

_______________________

Re: Birthday Cake: Heidelberg Bakery in Arlington,Va. They have tons of different kinds of cakes, cookies, and pastries. Prices are more reasonable than Cake Love and you can tour their kitchen on the weekend. So good.

The Going Out Gurus: And yes. Heidelberg.

_______________________

Herndon, Va.: Hi GOGs! Happy April. A group of friends is meeting in Bethesda for drinks and small eats. We have been to Jaleo and Willie and Reed's (best chicken wings in Bethesda) many times and looking for a new spot. I walk by Divino Lounge and it always seems empty. Has anyone been there to give me the FYI?

Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: I've been, but it's never done anything for me. Indifferent service, bartenders who can't get their cocktails straight ... there was a fun weekly salsa night, but it left for more hospitable climes. (I know there's supposed to be a tango night on Sunday, but haven't had the nerve to venture back.) The decor is more Chipotle than chic.

I'd rather go to Mon Ami Gabi for the new daily half-price wine happy hour, Ri-Ra or Austin Grill. -- Fritz

_______________________

Woodley Park, Washington, D.C.: I'm looking for volunteer opportunities that are fun and where I can meet people, but the bloodthirsty Single Volunteers Web site totally turned me off. Where else should I be looking?

The Going Out Gurus: Have you looked at DC Cares? There's a variety of volunteering options, many done in groups where you'll surely meet plenty of other people. Any readers have suggestions ? -- Maura

_______________________

Blue Mercury: I have to second the bad experience at Blue Mercury. I went to Lance in G-town based on a prior chat and was not happy with the results (or the attitude of the receptionist/cashier).

The Going Out Gurus: Sorry to hear about that. To date, I had only heard good things about him. If you have wheels, I can recommend Denude Med in Annadale. I had my brows shaped there, and I was extremely happy with the results. Another possibility is any of the Aveda locations.
-- Janet

Soggy Bottom: eyebrow management is best achieved by combined use of hard alcohol and a flowbee.

All my love,

Gene Shalit

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for that tidbit, Soggy Bottom.

Washington, D.C.: I'll be playing hooky from work tomorrow afternoon, and want to make the most of my time. The original plan was to go to the zoo and then the Zoo Bar for a drink and to watch tourists, but the rain ruled that out. Any suggestions? (did the Smithsonian thing last weekend).

Oh, and don't tell my boss...

Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Your secret is safe with us. Tomorrow, I'd look at bright colors at the Marimekko exhibit (opens at 11) and then be the first person in almost four months to see a movie besides "Return of the King" at the Uptown: the comic book flick Hellboy screens beginnning at 1. Grey days like this are made for curry and a hot steaming pot at Teaism. -- Anne

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: GOGs - what are your thoughts on FriendSwap? I was intrigued after reading Tuesday's Post article on this social/dating/networking invite only group.

Are they a bunch of exclusive snobs or should I be jealous for not having my link to the group?

The Going Out Gurus: I'm sure they're nice people, but they guy tracking women with his Excel spreadsheet made me think we're not missing much.

For those you didn't catch it, you can find the article in our dating guide. -- Maura

_______________________

Dupont, Washington, D.C.: Gurus -- Besides Rice & the Saki Room, are there any fun new-ish Asian resturants you'd recommend for dinner tonight in D.C.? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: You've no doubt been to the Cafe Asia in Dupont? You've mentioned, I think, the two brand-newest. -- Alexa

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Shopping question for Janet ... do you have any recommendations for jewlers in the area that sell estate pieces (engagement rings)? Other than Tiny Jewel Box? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: I know that Saks Fifth Avenue in Chevy Chase has a small estate department. Also, you could try Boone Jewelers.

Gold Cup Question: Hey, guys -- I read you religiously and I need your help! Some friends and I are trying to find a good bus trip to gold cup but can't seem to find anything on the Internet! It's only a month away, and Gold Cup's Web site wasn't much help. We want a good bus with great food and drinks -- price doesn't really matter. Any suggestions? Thanks. in advance!

The Going Out Gurus: You'll have plenty of options, GCQ. So far, I've seen bus packages offered by Party DC (www.partydc.com) and the D.C. Society of Young Professionals (www.dcyoungpro.com). Both include the trip down, food and drink en route, and an "after-party" at an area club. More will be coming our way shortly.

You might want to try the Capital Alumni Network (www.dcalum.org) and see if any school(s) you and your friends attended are organizing a trip down. I've hung out in the catered tents on University Row, and it's really the best place to be (if you're not post enough for Member's Hill). -- Fritz

Consignment Shops: I almost hesitate to give away my secret place!; Secondi in Dupont Circle is fantastic, but a little picky about what they take. If they don't work for you, I also regularly take stuff to Eclectic Threads in Arlington.

The Going Out Gurus: For the person looking for a place to sell some clothing, here you go.

_______________________

Yes! Polly Sues!: That's it -- check out the vintage wedding dresses downstairs at Polly Sue's in Takoma Park. Another option for new dresses is Angeri, but they are still pricey.

The Going Out Gurus: Want a vintage wedding gown? Here you go.

Silver Spring, Md.: Hi Gurus,
I had an almost very bad experience last night, so I want to brush up on my martial arts. I don't want to take self-defense classes, but would rather go to a Tae Kwon Do or karate class. Do you know of any in the Silver Spring area or anywhere in the DC area that is Metro accessible? Also one that has adult classes for men and women.
Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Silver Spring, There's Chung's Taekwondo on Old Columbia Pike in Silver Spring (phone 301-384-8847) or Gentle East Martial Arts on Flower Avenue (phone 301-585-2272). I haven't had any experience with these schools, so you'll want to check them out first and see if they work for you. (Any reputably school will let you watch a couple of classes or even participate once or twice for free). Your almost bad experience concerns me (Lynette) though and I'd like to recommend that you also check D.C. Self Defense Karate Association. While accessibility may be an issue, they have an excellent Taekwondo program for adults and children and a strong emphasis on self-defense. Taekwondo is an excellent sport and over time as you learn the sport you will learn to defend yourself. But if you need to learn how to defend yourself quickly, you need a program that focuses specifically on that issue. Good luck and stay safe.

Arlington, Va.: I am going to the Improv tomorrow night for the first time, are the smoking and non-smoking sections fairly well divided and how early do you need to get there (I am going to the 8 p.m. show) to get a good seat? Also, are there any good bars to go to around that area afterwards?

The Going Out Gurus: Good for you. I hear Dom Irrera is a dry man. The Improv is essentially a large, low ceilinged, subterranean club. There is not a noticeable distinction between the smoking and nonsmoking sections. Take it from me the non-smoker. Doors open at 6:30. Those who get there by 7 get the best seats -- that's the manager's advice.

As for nearby bars, I have a soft spot (actually several) for the Town & Country at the Mayflower Hotel. It's almost directly across the street. Leather couches that are peeling at the edges, city's best gin and tonic. End of the century glamour for a new one perhaps? It suits me. Rather pound back a tall frosty? Lucky Bar and Mackey's Pub are close enough. -- Kate

Hellboy: Do you know if "Hellboy" is a short-term thing at the Uptown -- or will it be showing endlessly like everything else?

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) am not sure exactly how long it will be there, but I'm guessing at least for the next couple of weeks or so. I can't imagine it will stay as long as "Return of the King," though, because splashy summer movies are just around the corner.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Is there anywhere that you would recommend to eat around the King Street metro? It's raining, so I don't want to have to walk too far from the metro. Thanks for the help!

The Going Out Gurus: Not really. You'll have to walk a few blocks. I don't think Vermilion is too bad, Bistrot Lafayette next door, and further up, the rather expensive Majestic. But you will get wet, unless of course you plump (literally) for the Joe Theismann Full Back (1 lb) burger across the street. -- Alexa

Why can't we all just get along?: Saturday marks a great achievement in my life; I was born 20-some years ago. Go me. Anyhoo, I want to make evening plans, which would involve bringing several friend groups together. Some of my friends (and I, for that matter) would prefer cocktails at a Kimpton bar, or like chi-chi bar, while the majority of the group is more dive-bar folk (re. dress code?!?). Regardless, I want it to be quiet and calm enough for conversation (no dirty Adams Morgan clubs please), preferably something new/different/unique (though I'll spare you from the list of where I normally go), non-pretentious, but still with class. Good people-watching gets bonus points. I also want to spare my friends from a hefty bar tab. Oh, and DC only. Uhhh, am I too picky? Advice, please!

The Going Out Gurus: It's your birthday, so why don't you just say "We're going to this bar and if you're my friend, you'll be there?" Just a thought.

It's hard to find overlapping circles between, say, Helix and the Raven. While you said no to Adams Morgan, I have to say that I like the upstairs Moroccan tent lounge at Soussi. Interesting decor, available hookahs, they make decent cocktails and have the beers your friends will like. Kate thinks you might want to try Aroma, too, for cocktails and beers, especially if you can get there early and try to stake a claim on seats in the back room. I concur. Another suggestion would be Honolulu: Nobody hates a vintage tiki bar.

Now, readers, it's your turn to offer suggestions.

Tell us where you usually go, because I'm always curious about these kinds of things. -- Fritz

Need help, not joking! =): Gurus, please help! I have a few unrelated questions for you...

Joe, any advice on the best method of getting to/from the Dylan show tomorrow night at AU? i've never been there, and wasn't sure if the metro is close enough, or what time to arrive. and, any suggestions for places to grab some food/beers in the neighborhood either before or after the concert? Second, where can i buy some cherry blossom related goods...like tee shirts, stationary, baby clothes? And third, and most importantly, I have a third date tomorrow night that I've been put in charge of planning. (talk about pressure!) I'd like to do something low-key, in DC, but creative and kind of different than just hitting a bar/lounge that both of us have probably already been to. Any ideas? Thoughts? Any events going on that are sure to be a hit?

thank you SO much!

The Going Out Gurus: Phew, that's a lot of territory to cover. First things first. Dylan's show at AU is on Saturday night, not tomorrow. (Tomorrow, Dylan is playing a surprise show at the 9:30. Some tickets will go on sale tomorrow at 10 but the show will certainly sell out.) As for getting to AU, the Tenleytown metro is about a 15 minute walk from campus. Or just take a bus up Mass Ave. I'd get there by 7. If you take the metro, there are a few restaurants close to the Tenleytown stop.

For Cherry Blossom trinkets, head to the source or check out the festival's official web site.

And for your date in DC, um, why don't you sign both of you up for a cooking class together. Or if you're looking for something quiet without a lot of people around, you could go to a Wizards game.

We should get triple pay for this answer!

Washington, D.C.: Do you recommend Petite Plats in Woodley Park for dinner? In-laws will be in town tomorrow evening and enjoy French food.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes I do. It's sweet in there. -- Alexa

Anonymous: What the heck is Gold Cup?

The Going Out Gurus: It's a steeplechase race that turns into one of the biggest social gatherings of the year -- think Ascot, but with khakis and blue blazers.

Alexandria, Va.: I'm looking for a little mental stimulation and would like to join an existing book club. Can you suggest where to start looking for a compatible groug that is accepting members?

The Going Out Gurus: You might try Craig's List or going to the book shops you like most -- say Chapters Literary Bookstore or Politics and Prose or a nearby biggie like the Barnes and Noble at Potomac Yard. Each has a bulletin board, the last two have in-house book clubs and discussion groups. Read on, right on. -- Kate

Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.: Hi Guru's
Can you help me with some info about the Cherry Blossom 5K fun run this Sunday? Where does it begin? How early should I get there if the start time is 8 a.m. and most importantly, any info on what the parking situation will be like? Is it easier to just Metro on in? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Capitol Hill, Here's our information on the Cherry Blossom 10-Mile Run , including the 5-kilometer fun run. The main race begins at 8 a.m. and the fun run starts shortly after that and goes in the opposite direction. You can show up before race time and sign up. I'd recommend getting there fairly early and yes, take the Metro. It will be crowded and there isn't that much parking in the area. Have fun!

Washington, D.C.: Any suggestions for two couples that don't get out much due to little kids to have dinner near the Kennedy Center before "The Producers" on a Saturday night? Since we don't get out much we'd like a relatively nice place. Ideas? I can't think of anything where you can park, eat, then enjoy the show over there!!

The Going Out Gurus: You might try the newly revamped Roof Terrace restaurant at the Kennedy Center, or perhaps Dish. Both are quite convenient location-wise, if a little pricey. But if you rarely go out, then maybe you should splurge. -- Jen

Springfield, Va.: What can I expect from Home on a Saturday night? I've seen two events listed for Saturday nites: Synergy and Play, but not sure which is the current one.
(Oh, and how is the dress code also?) Thanks GoGs!

The Going Out Gurus: I think it's back to Play at this point, but I have trouble keeping my promoters straight at that place. (Weekends have been spinning like a broken carousel over there. It's house, trance and international music, most likely, with a young crowd. Dress code is similar to Platinum, etc. -- dress well, shine ya shoes, leave the sneakers at home.

Washington, D.C.: If I were to ask each of you for one fun tip for this weekend, what would your top tip be. I.E. there is a great sale at X or I would not miss the X concert or the X museum which usually charges admission is offering free tours. Of course, I know about the Cherry Blossom parade and events. What else? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Okay, in doing the survey, I expanded the question to this week. Here's one thing the Gurus want to do before we talk again: Fritz - Buck Hill or swing dancing at the zoo, Janet - go to Wink, Joe - score at his soccer game, Jen - pay-what-she-can for "Rosemary and I", Maura - her taxes, Alexa - get some rhubarb, Kate - The Darkness.

Uptown re: FriendSwap: A few friends and I (who was on hiatus from present boyfriend) went last year and had a ball. The article in the Post was nothing like my 2003 experience, which either means I don't see eye to eye with the reporter or this year's event was totally different.

None of us made any big love connections, but we met new people who were normal, nice and interesting in a comfortable setting.

The Going Out Gurus: Ah well, some good news on FriendSwap.

Vintage Engagement Rings: For the person who is looking for vintage engagement rings, I suggest going to Old Town Alexandria. There are about five or six antique stores there that have a large selection of rings at a range of different prices.

The Going Out Gurus: This person suggests Old Town as a place to look for vintage engagement rings. Try it out.

Arlington, Va.: For the guy looking to play softball. Sportleagues runs all kind of stuff in D.C., Md. and Va. Check out sleagues.com

The Going Out Gurus: Another suggestion for our softball players. Great! Thanks!

L'enfant Plaza, Washington, D.C.: What are the details on the fireworks next weekend? I hadn't heard about this.

The Going Out Gurus: New as a part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival this year. Here's the whole she-bang.

Shy BF: Kickball sign-ups are going on right now. (www.worldkickball.com) It doesn't get much more laid back and friendly. I've played for a few years and have met tons of really nice people and very few jerks.

The Going Out Gurus: See, the world (and Washington) are full of friendly people. Thanks for the great tip.

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: Any word on whether the 9:30 club will be selling tix to the 4/2 Dylan show tomorrow morning??

The Going Out Gurus: You can try getting tickets online tomorrow morning. Tickets won't be sold at the club. But this will be an unbelievably tough ticket to get. Good luck.

Bethesda, Md.: A bunch of friends and myself (low to mid 20s) are looking for a good place to go for some birthdays on Saturday that is going to have a young crowd and isn't going to have a problem getting a large number of people in (40+ males and females throughout the night). Any suggestions for a place in D.C. that is going to have a crowd, but not have lines around the block? We are looking more for a bar where we can talk to each other and meet some other singles. Thanks for your help.

The Going Out Gurus: Forty people, Saturday night, crowded but not too crowded, and you can talk to each other? That's really a tall order, especially with short notice and basketball -- and at many places in Adams Morgan or Dupont, for example, a crowd of 40 is like a quarter or a fifth of the (legal) capacity.

I would have suggested calling, say, Adams Mill Bar & Grill, the Angry Inch, McFadden's or Stetson's and trying to get their semi-private rooms or floors for early in the evening, and then mingling more outside the group as the night went on.

If any readers have suggestions, I'd welcome them. -- Fritz

Gold Cup : Gold cup is an excuse for the great unwashed wanna-be's that populate Washington to pretend they are hanging with the Old School Virginia Horsey set. I assure you, the horsey set skips this one or stays on their side. If you really want to see a steeplechase, there are dozens of real ones all over northern virginia where you can get a true feel for the sport. Gold Cup is just a bunch of drunks, dressed in their Easter finery, being herded on and off of buses like cattle. Don't bother.

The Going Out Gurus: It's an excuse for people to dress up, socialize and pretend to watch the horses. Nothing more, nothing less.

DC United: What - no mention of Freddy Adu's premier in DC United's opening day Saturday?

The Going Out Gurus: I'm going and editor Ben is going. If you're heading that way, the happy hour spots are Lot 8 and Capitol Lounge. -- Fritz

Alexandria, Va.: Dear Gurus, where are the best spots in Old Town Alexandria for a variety of martinis? I know of several places in D.C., but I'm looking for something closer to home. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: I've never really been impressed by the drinks at bars in Old Town. For cocktails, I like Cafe Salsa's mojitos, margaritas, etc. Vermillion bored me, and the drinks weren't even that tasty. (Decent beers, though.) Alexa likes the bar at the Majestic restaurant, but I (sadly) haven't been. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: Gurus, where can a group of early 20's gals go dancing on a weekend without getting groped? We're cheesy - we like top 40 dance music, like Britney and J-Lo. D.C. only please (and even Dream is too far). Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Chief Ike's Mambo Room? They play enough top 40 there, and the crowd is pretty cool. Crush is fairly cheesy (as are the friends that have dragged me in), and I haven't gotten complaints about groping. (Then again, I'm a guy who doesn't grope, so I might not notice it.)

Suggestions, ladies?

Washington, D.C.: GOGs, took my roomie to Chi-Cha last Sat for her bday - if you go early (6:45ish) there's no crowd and we got our own little niche seating about 15 . . .

The Going Out Gurus: An idea for the party planners. It can be pricey, but very cool.
