. . . Waited for the First Daffodils of the Year to Appear
Sunday, March 7, 2004; Page C02
. . . waited for the first daffodils of the year to suddenly appear -- miraculously, reliably, earlier than expected -- on the slopes of Rock Creek Park. It has happened again, already. It brings a message and a memory. The message is: Spring is near. The memory is of Lady Bird Johnson. The Committee for a More Beautiful Capital planted tulips by the Tidal Basin, mahonias behind the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, 800,000 bulbs on Columbia Island -- and a lot of early flowering daffodils on the hillsides of Rock Creek Park.

Those sunny yellow flowers have just begun their appearance on the west side of Rock Creek Parkway just below the P Street Bridge. You can see them from your car.
