Alexandria is about to get a little bit cheesier. On Thursday, Cheesetique (2403 Mount Vernon Ave., 703-706-5300), a boutique for the curdy stuff, is set to open in the Del Ray neighborhood. The main attraction: more than 50 artisanal products from Europe and the United States, most of them, says owner Jill Erber, hard-to-find varieties from "teeny farms with 12 goats." With pale yellow walls, a black-and-white-checked floor and a pressed-tin ceiling, the shop recalls an era before one-stop grocery shopping -- right down to finding Erber behind the counter, doling out samples. "Tasting will be encouraged," she says. After all, "one person's perfect cheese is another's stinky mess." Janelle Erlichman Diamond
