Venus Williams couldn't snap her losing streak to Lindsay Davenport, and Serena Williams was forced to retire with a badly sprained left ankle in the quarterfinals of the Bausch & Lomb Championships yesterday in Amelia Island, Fla.

Top-ranked Davenport beat Venus Williams for the fourth consecutive time, rallying for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win. She advanced to today's semifinals against seventh-seeded Nadia Petrova, who beat 15th-seeded Shinobu Asagoe, 6-0, 0-6, 6-2.

Hours later, Serena Williams won the first set 7-5 and was leading the second set 5-4 over Silvia Farina Elia when she tumbled backward while sliding for a ball. She was treated by trainers, and had triple match point before losing the second set on a tiebreaker. Serena Williams then informed tournament officials she wasn't able to continue.

The win sent 12th-seeded Farina Elia into today's semifinal against unseeded Virginie Razzano, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over sixth seeded Vera Zvonareva.

The Williams sisters were playing their second matches of the day after rain postponed most of Thursday's matches.
