Judge May Release New Mother

A Maryland judge last week refused to cut short a woman's five-year prison term so she could bond with her month-old baby, but he said he might reconsider as early as June.

After hearing a psychiatrist's testimony about the importance of maternal bonding, Washington County Circuit Court Judge Donald E. Beachley said he would consider reducing Rebecca Price's sentence to nine to 18 months if she has not been released from the Maryland Correctional Institute for Women by then.

Price, 31, of Greencastle, Pa., was sentenced for stealing more than $23,000 from clients of the Hagerstown travel agency where she worked.

Rock Creek Park Forum Planned

A town hall meeting will be held Thursday night to discuss wildlife issues in Rock Creek Park, including deer problems and the growing coyote population.

The 6:30 p.m. meeting will be at the park's nature center, 5200 Glover Rd. NW. It is co-sponsored by Park Superintendent Adrienne Coleman and D.C. Council member Adrian M. Fenty (D-Ward 4).

Coleman and Fenty will be among the speakers, who also will include other park officials and representatives of the D.C. Department of Health's animal control program.

Representatives of the city's departments of Transportation and Public Works have been invited to the meeting to discuss general infrastructure issues, according to Fenty's office.

NW Arson Displaces 4 Residents

A rowhouse fire attributed to arson caused $80,000 damage early yesterday and displaced four residents on Harvard Street NW, officials said.

The blaze started about 1:30 a.m. on a deck behind the rowhouse and spread inside, said Alan Etter, spokesman for the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department. Etter said that police have a good lead in the case and that the case was not part of the area's serial arsons. Forty-six blazes dating back to March 2003 are linked to one suspect who remains at large.

A second fire, caused by a space heater, started about 2:45 a.m. yesterday in a rowhouse on Ames Place NE. It did $120,000 damage, but no one was hurt.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
