Scott Parsons, also of Bethesda, was 19th but has virtually locked up an Olympic berth with his eighth-place finish in the 2003 world championships. Three-time World Cup champion Scott Shipley failed in his attempt to make his fourth Olympic team.
Three American pairs remain in contention for Olympic berths in the two-man canoe competition.
Joe Jacobi, a Bethesda native, and Matt Taylor finished in 10th place, Jeff Larimer and Frank Babcock were 20th. Scott McClesky and David Hepp also made it through to today's semifinals. . . .
Sada and Emily Jacobson are happy to be competing at home for a change and don't mind facing each other in the process.
Sada, ranked No. 1 in the world in women's saber, defeated younger sister Emily, 15-13, to win the title at the U.S. Fencing National Championships in Atlanta.
There were more smiles than steely glares exchanged between the Olympians during the intermission before their final bout at the Georgia World Congress Center, but once the sisters stepped onto the strip, they were focused.
"I get on the strip and I fence her just like I would fence anybody else," Emily said. "I try to win as hard as I can. And after the bout, no matter who wins, we're sisters. It doesn't carry over." . . .
Kim Severson was penalty free in the cross-country and maintained her lead through two of three phases at the equestrian Rolex Three-Day Event in Lexington, Ky.
Severson, of Keene, Va., and Winsome Adante turned in one of six perfect performances in the four-star CCI (concours complet international) division. She has a total of 37 penalties.
• SOCCER:Diego Maradona was put back on a respirator while he battles serious heart and lung problems in Buenos Aires.
The soccer great, 43, has been in intensive care for nearly a week. The return to the respirator was meant to assist his breathing but did not mark any worsening of his health, according to a medical update.
Maradona remains in guarded condition, and the hospital said his recovery would be "slow and laborious." Doctors are treating him with drugs for a heart inflammation and antibiotics for a lung infection. . . .
Liverpool beat Manchester United, 1-0, on Danny Murphy's 63rd-minute penalty kick in a Premier League game played amid heightened security at Old Trafford.
Liverpool won on the road and strengthened its hold on fourth place while stopping United from moving up to second.
There was tighter security than usual for the 67,000 fans at Old Trafford. Six men and a woman were arrested in Manchester on Monday on suspicion of plotting terrorist attacks.
• HOCKEY:Lasse Pirjeta scored twice, and Finland rallied to beat the United States, 4-2, on the first day of the hockey world championships in Prague.
The Americans jumped to a 2-0 lead in the opening period, but Finland tied it in the second.
Pirjeta gave Finland a 3-2 lead 12:55 into the third period when he fired a slap shot past New York Rangers goalie Mike Dunham. Pirjeta, a forward with the Pittsburgh Penguins, made it 4-2 with just over a minute left.
